screamdesign.com has some tutorials although they are getting really crappy over there. You might want to check it out, there's probably a few good ones. Doesn't illustrator have help files or something? |

I learned how to use Illustrator in school but I don't know of any tutorials. But doesn't the software come with a lesson book? That's where I basically learned most of the tricks from. The only drawback is you actually have to buy the software
I too am looking for a copy of Painter, just to try out. But they don't even have any demos for it A copy is supposed to come with a wacom tablet, but my Intuos is refurbished. So no bells and whistles for me.

The PEN Tool is tricky. But once you learn how it works and master it you will be glad you took the time to practice..(and is DOES take practice)
I LOVE Illustrator. Saddly I do NOT know of any tutorials. If you have seen any of my Secret of NIMH pics. They all started out as vector images from Illustrator that I brought into PhotoShop.

About 2,5 - 3 years ago I learned Illustrator 7 from the book The Illustrator 7.0 Bible. Illustrator 9 is one heck of a bigger and better program than Illustrator 7. If The Illustrator 9.0 Bible is just as good as the 7.0, I think it's really worth the money!

OK, time to decloak (I've lurked around these boards for a bit, but haven't posted . . .yet). The ref to screamdesign caught my eye, as they interviewed my friend and I awhile back after we did a shockwave single (for the indy band the Control Group . . . which is probably part of their slow decent into crap ). Anyhow, as for vector stuff, I don't know of any tutorials, but I can offer the following tips: For original work, or if you need some splines for any 3d work, Illustrator's definitely the way to go. I'm hardly an expert with it, but I love the spline control it offers. However, if you just want to get existing work into vectored format, you can use Adobe streamline or Flash's native conversion tools. Both are somewhat clumsy, and require a trial-by-error sort of mentality to get the optimal results, but they'll often save you loads of time vs. bulding the vectored images from scratch. Personally, I prefer Flash's tools, but you can probably just chalk that up to convenience, as I do most of my work within flash, anyhow. The key to it all is optomization, though . . both of those packages will create waaaay more paths than are necessary, and you'll have to fiddle with the settings to rid yourself of the unneccesary bloat. Butif you have access to flash, I'd use the conversion tools there, and then just export the image into whatever format you need. Just a suggestion .
