It's been a while since I've had the time to do any painting/drawing, but a couple of weeks ago I finally finished this picture. It has some errors in it as it doesn't look exactly like my girlfriend, but I think it is a good resemblance. I won't show you the photo I used for reference as I don't think she would like that too much, her hair was a mess in that picture . As long as I'm talking about hair, I had some real trouble drawing it so it looked realistic and I redrew it several times before finally settling on this. If you have any tips on how to quickly draw hair feel free to tell me.

Anyway, let's hear what you think of the picture.

I know you're joking but I would have to take offense to that. She is my girlfriend after all

Seriously, what made you think that. I can't see the resemblance to neanderthals at all. Perhaps it's that the face from eyebrows and down are so small in proportion to the head. Well, that's because her head is tilted forward.

WitchLord- I think you did a good job from what I can see. It would be better if you could post the reference picture to get an idea of what she really looks like. However, failing that I think the mouth and the nose came out very well. I would say you could add a little more tone to the forehead to give a little more of a curve to it. Other than that it looks real good.

Thanks Fianchetto!

I'll see what I can do about the photo, she's not reading this forum after all (I think). But it will have to wait until I get home since I don't have it here.

You might be right about the forehead, I'll give it a try.

I just think she has a slightly square and large forehead in the pic.... It might be the hairline?

Hi, Witchlord! Hey this is nice. Like it. Nice shading. I think that her hair look a bit smudgy or something. A bit tho. :I There could be more simple strong lines, for instance. Very strong lightsource. Keep posting!

Perhaps, I'll try giving the forehead a bit more curve, maybe it will be better then. She does have a high hairline though so I will not change that.

Juha:
Thanks.

Yeah, the hair is not really finished but I didn't have the patience to go in and do draw it in more detail. I have already redrawn the hair from scratch like 5 or 6 times, so I will not do any more work on it. But I think I have learnt now how to draw hair so the next picture will hopefully be better.

Hi Witchlord!
Nice work, is it paper or Wacom? About your hair, I think the details are very good, but it looks a little flat, maybe some parts in the foreground could use a little more contrast?

I've also done some portraits, mostly pencil on paper, using photo references. (people think it's generally very boring to pose.. )Here's one of mine. Not finished though.. I think you've done the facial parts better than me, the nose looks odd. But I'm quite happy with the hair. What do you think?

It's made entirely with a Wacom. I never really got the hang of traditional media, I much prefer the Wacom.

Now that you mention it, I agree with that it looks a bit flat. Is it contrast it needs? I'll have to try that too.

I think your portrait looks very good, except for the nose it's perfect. I really like the detail of the hair, it looks very real.

There is something that is bothering me about the hair on the left side of the picture though, it's looks as if the hair is floating in the air. I don't understand how it can do that, except if she is electically charged .

Try to do something about the nose and this picture will be something to be very proud of.

I like the shadows in her cheeks, but just like the others i think het forehead is too flat. And i think het hair is too... simplistic. dunno if that's the right word but there's something missing.

Anywayz really nice picture

Thanks, both of you.

I think I'll go in and fix these things. I didn't think I was going to do any more work on it before, but from all comments here I have regained the interest in the piece.

Pic looks quite good... the only thing I would try improving is the hairline... I think it would look better if you cleared some areas a lil bit.. its a very abrupt line right now... Do you have a higher rez version of this pic?

Hehe, you registered just to give me your comment, I'm flattered

Yeah, you're right. It is a bit abrubt, and dark as well.

I realized that the portrait had many flaws before I displayed it here, but I never knew exactly what they were. It's good to know that this forum is here for this kind of valuable help.

Nice work Witchlord!

Really smooth shading on the sides of the eyes leading to the temples and the ears. The hanging hair is really nice too though the top hair is more sketchy (partly because the technique used doesn't work the same with flat, combed hair)

Good proportions, especially with this direct front portrait!

The eyes are too black though, while shadowing (flash photo, right?) under her neck and in back of her hair is at most 85% gray. Still, it's a great pic after not having painted for a while I haven't painted for a few monthes too, and when I do start up, I hope I hit this mark.

Thanks,

It's not the eyes that are too dark it's the rest that is too bright I agree with the hair, it needs some heavy cleanup.

I'll see if I can't get around to fixing the painting this weekend. But I have other projects too, so I'm not sure I will have time for it.
