Well, it could be a million and one things. Here's a brief check list

1. Check to see if you have a hardware lock on the back of your computer. If you don't then you're using cracked software (gasp,... shudder) and that's probably the problem. If you do have a hardware lock go to step two.
2.Restart your computer. Start a fresh session of Max. Make a sphere. Apply a transparent texture to it and render. If it crashes go to step 3, if not go to 4.
3.Your application is probably corrupt. Uninstall and re-install a fresh copy of Max, also check to see if you are running win98. If you are, switch to NT or 2000.
4.The scene you are rendering is probably corrupt. Try merging the geometry into a new scene and rendering again. If it still won't render export the goemetry as a 3DS file and re-import it.

Hopefully on of these suggestions will help you solve your problem

An addition to Anticz's step 4, if you can track down exactly what object is causing the problems, try collapsing the modifier stack. That fixes a lot of problems. (And it's not as annoying as having to export to 3ds format, which has many issues of its own.)
