Here is a pic I've been working on on and off during the past two weeks.
Downsized pic:
Full size preview:
I would like some comments and critics regarding shape, shadow casting, color and general humanoid posture. This was a neat challenge trying to recreate a already existing anime robot in my own desired angle/posture. That's why it gave a not-so-awesome result, because it was completely thought of by me.
Frost already gave me a bunch of neat pointers that allowed me to complete the pic as you are seeing it now. Hooray for Frost! |

Looks good SG. . . very colorful It looks almost like you've looked at some toy statue, since it has a lightsetting but with such strong sparate colors.
critcs, I don't know. Maybe the gun design is a bit boring.
And, getting in some ambiend color and maybe a bit more colored light ?. But, then again, maybe you've colored it this way on purpose, nothing bad about that.
the background I think could be improved a bit, if you want one. If not, it could look just as good with a straight gradient or something.
Keep up the good work !

Ah...Evangelion....love that show, saw all the eps on laser CD during a week...MAN how the end sucked. But the action and robots was awsome. First of all you have a EXCELENT clear shape..theres noe smudging, the image is RAZOR sharp..love that..and the colors are perfect.
but...oh theres always a but...
First of all I am missing something to show its scale. The robot it GIGANCTIC...draw either some cars..or some houses, skyscrapers next to it.
Second...he is to fat. I bought a Evangilon toy when I was in NY this summer..its sitting on my monitor here, and your drawing has very human forms. It seems to me like its a man wearing a suit, when in fact..its a 20 floors tall robot. The torso should be very thin, and the thigh and leggs are also a bit longer and about as half as thick. Its an easy mistake to do, since those proportions does not fit a human..and thats you refrence point.
This is a good example of you drawing what you think should be there, and not what you see. So for a human, your scale is deadon..and perfect. But for thos robots...his a bit chubby.
Here are some photos of my toy, soy you can see the anatomy of a EVA.

That looks pretty cool,Francis.
Some critiques:
I think he looks a bit too compact, if compared to the real one. The hands looks too
tiny.
I love Robots!!

Hey, SG! Looks pretty! I like colors ans shades. They looks fine.
Hmm.. are you going to leave background like this? I feel like I could crit the background athmosphere because you could turn blue and white upside down.. if you're thinking by traditional and rational way. The air is always darker blue when you go upper is the athmosphere. Fog/white swells on down near by the ground. Hmm.. this is just a tip which came up to my mind.. just wanted to tell. Don't care about it if you aren't thinking by rational way - if you want to do it another way. Btw, this is nice as I said.

Joachim - Yeah, gun design is poor.. I don't really fancy guns that much. I'm not too motivated in wanting to draw the coolest gun. I guess a background is on the way, like Akira_X told me, drawing skyscrapers, or little cars, etc. I wanted to create a real looking robot even though he is from a cartoon.. My reference was the same character in alot of angles so I can get all the details I wanted on the robot's details.
AKIRA_x - Thanks for the insides, you caught me red-handed. I will try to make him look less fat and taller. I did use human anatomy reference to draw the initial torso/arms/legs of the robot.. I then drew an armor over it. Shame on me I didn't have any information or photo reference regarding the "naked" beast under the armor. Oh well What do you mean the ending sucks? It's awesome! They come to a philosophical conclusion prooving life is worth living. You can't have a better ending than that.
Mikael - Noted. Will make hands bigger and try to decompress him..
YourMum - Thanks mom for the insides, why did you have to wait and post this on sijun when you could've just told me over when we ate dinner last night? Sheesh. I'll try sticking in a background ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

Oi! Micke, you havta get yourself the 1/100th scale Gundams. Seventeen cm tall, detail level is 4 times that of the smaller models and they don't fall apart as much. More details to fill in with black pigment marker as well
Oh hey Snake Grunger. Interesting look to the EVA. It looks like vector graphics at first glance, with hevay use of gradients. Damn sharp work on those green vents on the shoulders, wowsa! |

I like my Eva toy better I just received it, I feel like a kid again. I know, I know, I am lame. But these toys are more like semi-animated statues, you can change the positions and leave them that way until you're sick of it. There's always a way to make it stand on it's feet, a great reference for balance depending on positions of torso/arms.
You can buy them here, they're cheap and very good quality! |

Dude, don't be ashamed. Action figures are awesome. I have my Peewee Herman action figure on my monitor. My Mr. T action figure and talking Mr. T doll are on my shelf, along with my Mega Man action figures and my full set of Quake 2 action figures. Duke Nukem is up there too. |

Tried working on a little more background stuff.. Evangelion still compressed/unproportionned/unbalanced. I guess if I want him to look right I'll have to restart. Still, this was 15 hours+ of practice

Its a very nice pic, I like it a lot.
Couple of points: The fingers holding the gun dont look right, they need to stick out more and the arm looks funny somehow.
I think the background looks a little bit rushed compared to the effort you have put into the character.
Someone already mentioned the gun so I wont mention it.
Other than that, its a very good pic, and I look forward to seeing it improved!

Heh...checked out the forum with the ripoff...It sucked!!! people just couldnt write words with more than 1 syllable! All they could do was having bothering logos and animations in their signatures!
Im glad Im in this forum, where people are serious and even intelligent!!
And for the pic itself I havta say I likes it! I wouldnt have made it that bright and colorful, but I just happen to like moody atmospheres...
I mirrored it just to see how it would look (got the idea from someplace trying to explain how to compose a pic), and I liked it a little better...maybe its just cause I want to achieve something, or perhaps it really looks better that way...its up to you to judge.
I think Ill include the mirrored version here so you wont have to do it it yourself:
Maybe this will help you in an other way too, if youve stared yourself blind on it in its original mode, this will help you see it in a new way and thus see mistakes or other things youve missed...
And finally, a bit of critisism...
Try position his right elbow a bit closer to his body, now it looks kinda the way a bodybuilder has it, "carrying a fridge"...
And the BG looks good, though Id like a bit more of the closer BG, right behind him...

I will quote spooge on that, "This guy is the STUFFF" At least he didn't practice his signature on my painting
Hahahaha!! That rocks Worst part is my Evangelion ain't all that great! Hahaha! I can't stop laughing... Someone stop me!
Yeah, well, if some kid saw this berserk robot breaking the neck, then tearing off the arm, then SQUASHING the head of the other robot, with blood on buildings and all over, then I guess that's a reason to ban it. But, no matter, I got to watch it, all that counts
I think the guy found his rip source here rather than sijun:

That'll teach me to go post my stuff on another forum Sorry to have betrayed you guys.
You guys are really nice on trying to defend me in this case I appreciate it! |
