Are those veins? Or cracks? Or mountains? It's a awesome space picture I really like the angle of the space ship.

For the clouds, you might want to try experimenting with layers a bit.
http://www.guildsoftware.com/s_0820-06.html

Here's a screen shot from the game I'm working on... for the clouds in the background, what I did was to make a layer that was a solid green swirly mess. Then I applied a layer mask, and pasted into it some random cloud-style texture I had laying around (I think it was a picture of a real-life nebula, actually, but I can't say for sure.) After that, I modified the mask a bit with the airbrush until I got the effect/shape I wanted.

Make sense?

If you like, I could probably dig up the original PSD file, but it's not too horribly exciting.

Oh, you might want to get some more stars in there too. It's looking a bit barren. Also, stars would probably be showing through the nebula...

The light shooting out from the cracks of that world, I would say needs to be an orange/redish. Since, as you say, it's molten MAGMa(Austin voice).

Technically, I don't think you would have nice purplie clouds around this area of the planet. Seeing as how large of an area the multon MAGMa is, prolly would have a orangish look fading to the nice purplie cloud stuff. Right now, to me, the purplie clouds look like the land mass for the planet on most areas. Clouds do stick up I think on the sides of planets, provided the planet has clouds. Check out like space.com or nasa.com for some earth shots on refrance shots of clouds at that far of a distance.

I dig the picture, I totally love space and all the colors that are out there. I just wana float around at the speed of thought... Ah well.

Scratch the part about clouds sticking up on the side. I checked out some pictures on space.com of the earth at an even closer range than what your angle is. You can't see anything but a round curvey earth My bad... Heres the a shot of the picture I was look'n at:

Yoink!

Space.com
-They got tons of images if you keep dig'n.

I tried to make a pic sort of like that a few months ago, but I gave up (I more or less killed the pic when I couldn't draw a good looking spaceship).
Here it is:

(It was made a with a mouse, since I hadn't gotten my tablet yet)

WAYLON: thanks for the info, nice background pic by the way. Right now im just lookiin up references for cloud like things. If any of u guys have seen the wawrcraft trailer or downloaded the realMyst demo, that's the type of look i was gettin at.

Jhof: thanks also. My pic isn't really realistic in a sense, never was meant to be, but I agree that my explosion needs more material within it, and a different color, though the blue looks cool

metalFan: That looks slick metalfan, though too much disolve effect, but you got the whole explosion feel down nice!

Superbug you really need to start with the basics here. Like the planet is not round...no matter how much good coloring you do it wont hide a bad drawing. is not an attack it is help. I would not worry about color so much yet. I think you need to get your drawing skills solid so that you have something better to work over. I mean what if you gave us a bridge shot from hi angle perspective of the smae planet blowing up. The other guy had good advice. Start using the layers ...to make a really good picture you have to think of it like a cell animation. Where the backgorund cell is on the bottom and maybe some forground character like your ship is at the top. You can use things like transparency to make good cloud effects and have a star feild behind it....things like that. I would deffinatly put work in your basic drawing skills...good luck
