I'm working on coloring this line art image somebody posted a while back. However, I have reached this sleeve and I'm not sure how to handle the folds in the cloth in a natural way. I have done some shading on it but it doesn't look right to me. Is there a way to color cloth without looking at a reference so that it looks at least somewhat normal every time?

If anyone out there could help me out I would really appreciate it.

Once again, sorry for having so many questions. I can never learn fast enough, and since finding this forum I feel I'm lagging behind everyone else and that I need to catch up. :/

you want to know more about natural folds in general: i know a book by burne hogarth wich deals only with this topic. it has been published in the us as well. the original title should be: dynamic wrinkles and drapery. looking forward to the finished pic.

Hello Jez, Here's a tutorial on folds and clothing for you
http://www.jdillon.net/tutorial/clothingmain.html

I tend to use the smudge tool with the opacity stylus, to "pull" the folds in desired direction. If you select the area you're working with, or check the "preserve transparancy" option for the layer you're on, you can keep the smear from getting all over the picture.

I guess if you know what you're doing, you can paint in the folds directly with the air-/paintbrush tool.
That's enough rambling for now..

When doing folds you need to think about gravity and pull. If there's a pull on the fabric from some direction, it will be strung with only a few straight folds. If the cloth is bent at some point, there will be folds gathering up at the inner curve of the bend. If the cloth is rotated, you will have folds going in the direction of the rotation. Gravity creates downward pull.

Just my thought on this matter. Dunno if I'm qualified to comment or anything.

Thanks everyone. I'm looking into getting that book and I'm at the URL metalfan posted right now.

Kig, your drawings are helpful, however I was picturing this cloth as more like a very thick, rubbery vinyl or something similar. So it's not so much that the gravity is pulling it, it's just bunched up on her arm. Hmm... I guess vinyl isn't really considered cloth.
