Could you please specify your question a little bit.....
I'm guessing that you are just starting out!
And I'm guessing that it's 3D animation you are interested in, yes?
My bet would be to go with a highend homebuildt DUAL PIII (500MHz min.) workstation with a GeForce2 graphics board and at least 256 MB of memory.

But if you could specify your question a little more, then I can provide better answers!

I forgot to add: If you want a really GOOD animation forum dealing with 3d software and hardware discussions go to www.highend3d.com but remember to post your questions in the relevant forums It's a very professional site with a lot of great guys from the film industry.

Faust: The GeForce is reasonably priced and performs better than most highend cards, at least in Maya, I don't know about Max 'cause it's never really appealed to me!

And why buy a Gloria card, when you can buy an SGI dual Octane.... muahahaha!
Don't sell a formula1 to a man who's learning to drive!!!!

For 3000$ aussi dollars your can forgett two things..a MAC and SGI.

Do you have ANY hardware from before in a old PC??? Try and reuse as much as possible.
Things like:
Floppy drive
Harddrive
Cabinet
CD rom drive

If you have those things you can spend more cash on CPU, RAM and graphics board.

Do you need a monitor? They cost ALOT and is SO important. Remeber, its not the keyboard, cabinet or mouse you look at al day...its a the monitor, and a bad one can damage your eyes. 17" is bare minimum, but I recomend a 19", but then again that would cost you half your budget...so I am guessing a 17" will do.

CPU: didnt think I would say this.....but AMD has more bang for the bucks...SPECIALLY since your on a thight budget. Anyone out there wanna argue against it..read up on test ALL over the net...its true.

RAM: get as much as you can aford...guessing you cant aford more then 128...see if you can get 256.

Graphics board: For 90% of the Geforce 2 performance at 60% the price..get ATI RADEON 64 MB DDR.

And as you see here..what you get is a NORMAL home computer. You want a race car for the price of a street car.....you GET a street car. For a budget for a REAL animation compture..for a minimum system...try doubeling your budget, and quadruple it for a kickass system.

Hope this helps...

wow, aus money....i hear it has devalued as of late.... i dunno what you can afford, i like the macintosh, but i use both.... if you want to roba bank and get a mahcine that is overpriced and you will have to sell your soul to afford anyhting for, getan SGI. then you can spend $800 for your wacom and a thousand bucks for pShop, and another $7500 for Maya....or you can go NT... or... hehe. ok, i'll stop playing. if you are gonna do any 3d, get a pc and a student copy of Maya and pShop and Aftereffects and flash and dreamweaver... but for bare bones, get a single processor pc (800MHz or up) and 256MB of ram and an oxygen vx1 and a couple of big drives (two ibm 30GB drives) a single procc will give you more performance than a dual. dont believe the hype, its a sequel. i have a dual 800MHz and it feels about as fast as my 450pIII, both have 512MB of RAM, but its cool...i use the dual box for maya, which is not even multi threaded, but is faster for rendering.....go single. it will save you some bucks and you wiull miss nothing.

now if you wanna be a really cool guy, just get a 400MHz g4, buyit bare bones, the smallest HD, lowest RAM, but spring for the radeon, and get the ram and extra 30GB+ drive seperately. this will save you bucketloads of cash and you will have a really sexy machine. the dual proc wont really affect you. either way, those two setups will do you fine. just decide if you wanna do 3d or not. if you will do hardcore 3d, you need to get the pc, we dont get maya on the mac until next may probably....

ok. ive rambled on like an idiot long enough.
