I tried to start different here and made my color palette completely before I began to scribble.

a little doodle:

what do you think of it? something missing?

I like the water a lot, but your biggest problem by far is the composition. The image doesn't really take advantage of front, mid and background, instead everything has been put in the middle ground and running on the edges of the pic.
Moving the tree towards the center of the pic would already improve the pic a lot, because half of it is cropped out of the pic and it's not like there's no room for the whole trunk to show. Halfly cropped (or too near to edge) things have a tendency to look distracting in a pic.

So what I'd do (I noticed it's just a scribble) would be to add something (maybe another tree) on the foreground left side, move the existing tree to been seen completely and maybe add some silhouettes in the far background.

I tried to rework the composition a bit (yeah i know the house on stakes is a bit cheap) and i actually like it, so thanks for pointing that out gecko.

here is it. I don't think I will work more on it but i would still be open to suggestions:

Oh and about the reflection of the moon.. oops- lets just say there is some non reflective giant moss there swimming in the swamp water that does not reflect the moonlight

edit: hmm now that i look at it again it looks somehow very static to me.. not sure what to do about that..

you should really fix that moon. either move it right, or move the reflections left. i feel all off balance...

*SporQ falls off his chair.

overall, great mood though, i like the lighting and tone.

Awesome pic. I definitely think Shardik's suggestion would add a lot to the pic.

shardik, wildkat, freddio, SporQ, nori, Tinusch : thanks all.

maybe I should make a "swampwatch" commercial out of it. Just imagine a zombie with a red swimming suit running around there

SporQ: You are right about the moon of course, I'll move that thing.

looks good. Esp. when adding that building and trunk..I don't think it's cheap, personally I don't think you need more details on it.
Critique would be that sun. If you think about it, the house almost disappear in the fog, even though it's just a few meters away, how about the mood then, you wouldn't see it at all. If you are going to have a sun in, do like it is in LA with the smog, the sun blends totally out.

Joachim: ..this thing with the sun did not come to my mind- would add a bit more to the atmosphere I guess. I'll keep that one memorized, thx
