Was anyone ever in the ansi scene? remember the bbs days ansi artist had to draw with lego size color blocks? If anyone cares I was in Dark illustrated, and CiA for a bit.
Btw it would be nice to see some old ansi art if anyone actually kept them, unfortunately I lost all of mine in a hd crash. Check out www.ice.org for some example for those who don't know that medium.. it was mainly an underground medium used to stylize bbs. |

I always wanted some programer slash artist to write a program that would convert images to ansi art.
Some out the program would simplify the shapes or something and try it's best to replicate the image. Later versions would, of course, try and match color as best as it could also. haha... would be funny stuff.
Yup...

Yes! i was very heavy into the ansi scene. I was an artist (and other things, heheh) in an old piracy group called eLiTe LaMeRz that me and a friend had. I did a lot of marvel ansi art etc... I remember iCE, good to hear its still around.. i always dreamed of getting into ACID or being a part of that whole thing. I still have that old stuff around, does anybody know how i can somehow import of bring them into say photoshop, or some sort of printable or workable form? if so email me at [email protected]

There were some programs to convert gif files to ansi, but the results were often horrible, and completely scorned in the ansi scene. Anyone caught using one or trying to pass themselves off as an original artist using one was usually flamed to death as you can imagine
There is a program called ans2pcx that converts the ansi data into a pcx file that you can open in photoshop and save as a gif, or whatever, which is what I did above. It isnt quite the same not being full-screen but it keeps the correct aspect ratio and color information, so it comes in handy. I have it on my other computer which isnt on the lan right now, but I'll post it sometime in the near future for those interested. |

Ah yeah, Ansi was where I started with computer graphics, back in the day! Damn I miss BBS's..
Btw, Napalm at one time there was a guy in CIA who went by the name Dark Entity. You remember him? I duno if he was all that good, but he could do ascii better than I could. He started a small little local based Ansi group named AWS, which never really got that far.
Ah, the memories (eyes tear up).

Wow Napalm.. its really you? Long time man, you probably don't remember me. But as a young lad I always wanted to either be in CiA or DARK.. so as soon as I got my first pbx i dialed the cia hq and got on the bbs and applied for CiA.. amazingly enough I got in, I believe my nick at that time was Frosty or Frostie.. Can't recall.. too much drugs.. haha.. jk.. Anyhow its nice to see you around again, I always admired your ansi art.. and have always considered you as one of the best ansi artist.. along with Chromatik, The Green Hornet, Tempus Tales, Spaceman Spiff..
P.S is there still a #cia channel on efnet? I'll check it out. |

heheh. damn. I dunno why, but so many digital artists hate ansi and ascii. I like it. as long as it's not those crappy line-art fonts... even some of the fonts are a bit crappy because they're unreadable.
I tried to get into the ANSI scene. I joined the local group Darkmoon was in, but I only released once, although I did quite a few more peices. (I never drew in the same style as most people though)
I have almost all the finished ones I've done on my web page, including the one released joint with Dm.
ANSI
I have a few other peices I never finished. one of Buffy, some animated bald chrome guy from the waist up (Persona from Shadowrun for Genesis)... I can't remember what all else. |

Hrmm. I'm ashamed of my BBS ansi days. I sucked. Anyway, I got some ANSI setup on my webpage, feel free to check it out:
http://www.lumental.com/sgrunger
I have included a ZIP with everything I drew.

Oh wow, this brings back memories. =)
I used to be really into ansi. I started w/ RiOT and later moved to ACiD. But i was doing more VGA and RiP art than ansi. I wish i can find some of that stuff....but those 1.44 floppies are long gone....wow, it's been almost 10 years.
Anyone remember TAG? that was a good ansi group....mostly x-ACiD memebers...
anyways....thanx for the cool flashback..
-feng
oh yeah, ACiD has a site too: http://www.acid.org tho now they do mostly weird high res stuff.....i like their older stuff better...i mean early 1990s old.
Napalm - great ansi pic!

Vortx - Yeah, RaDMan still runs the damn thing. He's old and a father now, and stuff. What was your old nickname? RedMan? Schinzosynth? Those are the only two (good? hehe) rip guys from ACiD I can recall. Lord Jazz also did RIP and was hella good at it, but his name's Chris, and that's not your name, hehehe. I was never in ACiD though, I joined Legend in 1996, with Somms and Iodine, two ex-acid guys. I then joined iCE later in 1996. RaDMan and Sinned Soul tried calling me up once saying "Uhh, hey you canadian ansi drawer Snake Grunger, join ACiD." |

Aaah..bringing back the old BBS days
Anyways, jHof, as napalm pointed out, there are programs to convert image files to ascii/ansi/html. Here's just an example of such a program:
http://elitemrp.net/mos/index.html
and an url to what it does:
http://elitemrp.net/mos/sonic.htm
I've seen some other proggies with better results, and some with poorer. Have fun.... cheater (c:`,
