I'm just trying to start out with markers my self, any tips, hints links on techniques, on how to use them would be very helpfull,
Oh and I'm starting out with just three
cold greys 30, 50, 70. Any books that you think is worth having would allso be great.

agent44- nice dude in your thread, I like your style.

mcr- The markers I used on this are called Chartpaks, and I also use Trias (expensive) but not for this drawing.

As far as how many I used, couldn't tell ya!

shyguy-I don't think I'm a good one to give tips on marker usage. I never took any classes in it, or read books, etc. So my technique might not be the best example to work from. What I do though is (unlike painting) I limit myself to small areas. Each area is finished before I move on to the next. This enables me to keep a wet edge on the marker, making it easier to blend colors. Start with a darker value first, then while it's wet, work the next lighter value into it, and so on. And if you find that the marker dried before you were happy you can sometimes use the lightest value of color used in the area to re-wet the applied color, then re work into it, but you can't do this alot cause it causes a color build up which won't allow color to be added. Then you'll have wet blotches all over.

I sort of treat my marker renderings like paintings, where I am concious of maintaining blende edges, so forth. I have to train myself in becoming more literal with my application.

And for this image I worked from background forward. That allowed me to add more detail as I got closer to the viewer, which helped the perception of depth.

The only books I can suggest are, ones like the art of star wars (all of them) especiall Doug Chiangs stuff, for examples of nice fluid and concise uses of markers.

Things I can say is stay away from blenders, it becomes to time consuming and doesn't work well. Keep whatever marker your are using easily accessible in your work area. Work very quickly, and if you mess up, consider the fact that scrapping what you did might be the only alternative.

If you are just starting, it's probably good to use a few markers (so you are not overwhelmed) and maybe render basic shapes, that's how I learned. But again, it wasn't until recently that I stared rendering little shapes within the big picture, and that allows me better control over a rendered image, but it also could be translated as a crutch, cause I want to a better fluidity

but the Smurfs are new to me!!!!

this is for an animation that I'm working on, and the design has changed since this was done awile ago, but it involves a caveman, and I have always liked the Flintstones so I guess it could be taken as a good thing that it looks like the show

damn thats good, i feel like im a smurf or something tho, haha. Um what kind of markers did you use? Prismacolor? Pentel? And how many did you approxmatly use? Just so i can try to bust out the marker skills.... looks great.
