I'm curious, It seems that some images come in clear and sharp in the forum, while others that are the same size don't.
What's going on?
What should I set my jpeg compression to. I checked the FAQ and it didn't go into any detail on this particular problem.
I thought all the images should look the same, and that the only difference would be in the time it took to download, but apparently there's more to it than that.
I have a 56k modem, is it just the difference between that and DSL?
I post my own images on a DSL computer at school, the images look clear and sharp on that network but my computer at home has a lot of compression artifacts.
Can anyone help?
thanks

Just a guess but are the displays at different Bitdepth or Resolution?
What looks good on 1920x1080 in Millions of colors, could look like crap on a 640x480 screen in 256 color mode.

Hey Dean, thanks.
its not a problem with my equipment, I've got good resolution with true color, but thanks for sharing your suggestions.

Two things are happening here. The lesser of the two is .jpg compression. While this will change an image slightly (or drastically if someone is silly enough to use really high compression), this is unlikely to be the problem. It more has to do with the image in question.
Loki's art is a good example, it's super sharp. This is because he works at very high resolutions and then sizes his artwork down, so any fuzzy edges that might of been in the work are eliminated. Also, his use of colors and contrast causes lines to appear even harder.
Here's a wonderful example ... one I don't think loki has posted on this forum yet, stolen from his web site.
I think one of the best examples of "blurry" art would be my own portrait. It's done mostly using smudge tools and there's lots of very soft edges and gradients.
See? Uber blurry!
