I've found I've always done my best work (not just art, but programming) at 1-7AM in the morning.

I think it's mainly because everything is so silent, I can think and just enjoy. Kind of an escapism from the rest of the day when I am badgered by 200 people...

What are your experiences?

My Biological Clock is royally screwed. Sometimes I'm up until 6 or 7am, at others I keep pretty much 'normal' hours. I seem to swing back and forth between night owl and day... er... person, on a monthly basis. Right now I'm in transition between the two.

The night time hours are certainly my favourite time of day, but I'm not sure if they're particularly more productive, or more creative.

Nothing beats a rainy, windy night for atmosphere, though.

I enjoy the daytime, but I love the night-time. It's not just the silence and focus that comes from that, its the absence of natural light. That is the most peaceful thing . . . everything you see is only thanks to individual sources of light that you can count.

I light only the area around my desks that I'm working on, everything else is dark. That adds more than anything to the perfect focus. Visually, I can't see anything clearly beyond the realms of the area where I'm working.

I've been growing to enjoy the night more and more the older I've grown.

i mainly dislike day time because i have bad eyes, natural sun light hurts, in the winter it's even worse.

night is good working time, there's no chaos and insanity going on in the office. that's something i've grown to really appreciate. the going tends to get pretty fucked up here at times.

I hear ya faustgfx...daytime is hectic

Myself I've been a night owl my whole life, but I am also like slightlytwisted. I think my biological clock is actually set to 28 hour days, I seem to switch between day and night hours every week (good thing I don't have set hours, but just project deadlines, it really sucked when I was a 9-5 type)

Starseed you bring up a good point that I didn't think about. The lighting in my computer room is restricted to just what I am working on at the time. It actually may help focus.

Most of the creative posts I have seen on here have been in the early morning hours.

when I'm programming at work it takes forever - concentration is easily lost etc I can usually do a weeks worth of it at home in just a night. It probably has a lot to do with being left alone in peace.

Yeap, the night thing has been a part of my existence. All the kids are sleeping, and the wife is out cold. I tried to get up earlier maybe a couple of hours before the usual time. But now I can't, it shifted back to nights. Old habits...:-/

I have light blue eyes.. and the sunlight gives me a headache. It's piercing.

I work so much better at night. I just love night time much more. I guess, like someone said above, because it is a lot quieter and nobody around to bother me.

I get up for work at 5:30-6:00am and stay up until about 1:30-2:00am working on the site. If it wasnt for my day job I would definately be a night person.

Indepth: I just wanted to commend the work you're doing on your site; I think you have a lot of great ideas and art there.

I think there is also something to being a night-owl that stems from the fact that during this period what you are doing is usually what you have chosen to do. There is no other responsibility pulling at your mind and even the prospect of having to do something you don;t want to do seems to be removed. At least for me.

I'd have to say I'm a night person myself. I'm not artist, but I gained this trait mainly from my excessive gaming late at night online or on a console system.

It's just stuck on me ever since, and I can't seem to shake it But I truly enjoy nighttime hours more, because of the peaceful serene feeling you get.
The chillier weather, and the absence of family members walking into your room when you're trying to concentrate..

I love the night, the days are just too bright! For me it's because everyone else is in bed alseep and you are all alone there is no distractions, you can just get into the zone for painting, drawing, creating and not be forced out by interruptions around you, like colleges, friends, brothers, teachers etc.
This is just a little someting I was told recently by a friend, dim light/staring at a monitor all day doesn't make your eyes go bad, it actually makes them stronger!! So thats why the daylight hurts and we can see fine in dimness.

I don't have to worry about school, day job, etc... So my nightowl tendencies have taken over. Today, I woke up at 8:30 pm, and will be hitting the sack at around 1pm tomorrow. I'm doing an illo job for Dragon Mag right now, and you can't beat the nighttime for undisturbed delight.

What I really love to do, is play movies while I draw/paint. I 'listen' to at least 3 movies a night... and I pick those that contribute to the creative feel... Labyrinth, Nightmare Before Christmas, Legend, etc. It's not uncommon for me to play one movie twice in one night. I have one of those tv/vcr's set to the immediate left of my computer. What a luxury

I've been trying to break my nocturnal habit for about three years....I can go only about a week before everything get's fucked again.

It's hard for me because my fiance is a total day person and I sleep during the time she is up...ending up actually seeing her from around 6pm - 11pm. I can't help it, I'm angry during the day...maybe it's some kind of disorder or something. Not to mention I hate the vibrant colours, and the happy feeling of daytime....not to mention those fucking BIRDS! The dark blue colours, and silence of the night influiences everything I do....artisticly...I think. I get this feeling of peace being able to walk the streets in the fog around midnight and the nights sound kick ass. Sometimes I see shit...and hear shit....and......what?

You guys are all crackheads and tweakers. I love the daytime. In fact, when I've not gotten terribly behind on my sleep, I'm even a morning person.

damn, i hear ya.... i can't go on doing things in the day, so i do everything around 12:00pm-6:00am i dont like daylight... hell, i can't stand the lights in my room at night (good thing digital art is on a monitor, hehe, no need for a bright light)
but for me it's a really bad habit which i'm trying to break, especially since i'm going to college. waking up early (6:00 am) during the week, and then staying up till 6-7 in the morning on weekends, kinda messes things up, especially the day i college starts up after the weekend. but shit man, i feel best during the early morning hours. everyone's asleep, and i get the solitude i need. i just get worried what's gonna happen once i'm on my own, and i finish college. i'd never be around during the day, hehe. damn, i'm rambling.............

The night is pretty much the only time I draw, and that messes up my inner clock like hell. On weekdays I have to get up for school at 7 AM so I usually force myself into bed around 1 AM.....On weekends I stay up like forever to draw. And everything got really terrible in the holidays when I used to stay up pretty much all night to draw and slept all day. I enjoy staying up all night, but I hate getting up at sunset.

I don't really know why I prefer the night for drawing. I guess it has something to do with what you guys already mentioned..... the absence of light and sounds that could distract you. The daytime is so full of visual and acoustic perceptions that you can't be inspired because your mind feels no need for fantasies, since there's already so much to see. Also, the nighttime is really inspiring, it makes me think of all kinds of things ranging from romance to dark fantasy castles, while the stars and the moon give a kind of SciFi influence.

For me, the perfect place to do art would probably be a lighthouse at the sea, with a city nearby, because I like the little light dots the streetlights and such create. An airplane cruising over nighttime New Orleans would also rock as a place to work, if you had some more space there .

all the best,

I love the night, because I'm winding down to go to sleep and my mind is clear. It's easier to make a pencil do what you want it to do in that state I find. Tried drawing in my free-periods at school but people keep coming over and looking at what I'm doing.

Hh Bugscratch im exactly like you, im definitely a night person but during the week i have to wake up between 7am and 9am depending of days, so i try to go to bed between 1am and 3am, but the weekdna nd during holidays its more like : i go to bed at 7 or 8 am and i wake up at 4pm

and its EXTREMELY hard for me to sleep at 1am after 1 or more week of holiday.

Ad for the reasons, i have blue eyes and day light hurts me (and glasses i have to wear strenghten that) , and i dislike all the activity during day, too many people, too many noises (noises that are not MY noises), too many disturbances ....
during night i either listen to my music, or play movies i like, or just work in total silence, and i am wayyyy more productive. (i also some times like to play all the night to some console rpg , like FF9 these days )

LOL Mime

I know that, having to sleep at 1 AM after a week of holidays is extremely hard....
The worst part is my mother who thinks that it's unnatural to sleep till 4 PM so she always wakes me up at 11 AM I wonder whether I'll ever get her to stop that. I guess not

I HATE day light! Makes me can't sleep, every thing is noisy! At night, its so out side, its so quiet and i'm sitting in my room alone and draw until the sun rise.

yeah. nighttime usually is very quiet, and you can totally focus on your work. my mind works faster and is more open at night.. erm.. too. night seems so pure, too, when i can concentrate on what you want to, and not worry about anything else. it's weird. for most of the school year so far i've been staying up till about 1am, waking up at 6:30. i could bear with 5.5 hours, but recently i can't do that. i have become aware of this interesting feeling called 'sleepiness' to the point of.. ehe sleep. it sucks.. i have so much to get done.

i'll have to agree with Buscratch, too about the visual disctration thing. daytime for me is sketching people, still life, coming up with ideas and working on boring technical things. at night i rarely do that. that's when i usually do 'art'.
