Looking at some of Spooge's matte painting examples, where he expanded a plate past the frame, it struck me that it wouldn't be a bad exercise in learning to paint realistically.
Anyone have any thoughts on this, especially if you're a matte painter? When I have time, I'm going to try painting a new element or character into a digital photo. I think it would be an interesting challenge. If others can spot the painted elements, then it fails. If they can't, then it succeeds.
I think the new element added should be more than just an extension. It should also be new objects, like buildings, vehicles, plants, etc. Anyway, thanks for your feedback. |

WHy is no one posting to this thread? Especially with all the Spooger's out there?
I have to hurry up and get going, I am heading up to see my family. My dad is in the hospital, I have to be up there.
Regardless, I think this is a great idea. Essentially I have been trying this half heartedly, and just need something to start the fire up. Are you considering posting an image, or are you going to just hack away into some photo? SHould we both, or anyone else attending for this matter, use the same image and try something? Or are we going to work into our own images?
Either way, this is good, and I would like to partake in this venture, let me know what you are going to do and I will follow suite in what no spare time I have...heh
See ya moses later... |

Hey, Fred. Good to hear from you. It's like crickets in here so far
Yeah, I definitely want to try some of these. I'll post images as soon as I work on them. But right now I'm absolutely, positively buried. I halfway expected you to want to do these. It only takes a small leap of the imagination to come up with doing these "extended plates" for practice.
I think the subjects should remain open, so go for it whenever you get a chance. I've tried starting exercises formally, but I'm always the one to get busy and flake out. Hehe. I'd love to see what you come up with.
Like I said, I'll get on this ASAP. Thanks for getting back ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I think it would be a great way to practice painting realistically without simply copying whats already there. I might have a go at this sometime in the next week.

I'll try to do some this weekend. I think it's a great idea-I've been mulling over it in the back of my head for a week or so.

I agree, I think this would be a great idea.
Maybe one of the matte artists could give us some pointers as we nudge along.

I know this isn't exactly what you mean, but I had fun trying it. This is my daughter. My father-in-law is a big Star Trek fan, so I attempted it for him to have. I really need to work on the shading, maybe I'll fix it someday.
Oh, she started out with just a diaper on.

It's just a camera trek! Haha!
Seriously tho, I'm into it too, although I also have a tendency to drop out of stuff due to bad planning.
