I formated my computer today, and I tried using my brothers Window's ME disk to install as an OS. Well, it wouldent let me because it's only for his dell. But previously i've used my friend carson's dell disk, (which was for his dell, just an older model) and I think I remember it saying this before and then start working later after i did something. BUt of course I forgoot what it was that i did. (???) Well, is there any way in hell for me to get this working? Because my brother is extremly greedy about his computer.. and without mine... I don't have anything to do. Help me please!

to sum it up.. is there a way to get past this damn message that is telling me that I can't use his dell disk on my sony computer.... dos sucks!

thanks guys!

Serves you right for actually buying a Sony computer (and being a big 'ol pirate).

WOW, could you be anymore helpful??

And how does the fact that I formated my computer and am wondering how to install the windows ME disk that came with my brothers ccomputer, onto my computer have anything to do with the fact of me buying a SONY? Would it work any damn better if I bought a different kind of computer?

Besides, that was not my question, it was if I can put that OS on my computer? and is there a way of getting by that message telling me i cant??

And just so you can sleep better at night balistic... Instead of using my brother's ME disk... I used my friend's win 98 disk!

The fact that you have a largely propietary computer kind of complicates any upgrade you'll ever want to do.

Its probably not the OS telling you it can't be installed on your computer, its Dell saying it doesn't want to install on a non-Dell machine.

Didn't your Sony come with a refresh disc?

Hence the reason why I dont like OEM machines. Only OEM stuff works on OEM machines. The WinME disk probably isnt a real ME disk, its OEMed through to Dell and they code it to be read by their computers (bios whatnot). Im sure there is a way around it somehow. Are you using a boot disk to set everything up? or booting from the CD? If you need to, try to make a system disk on your friends computer and use it on yours and boot from that. (control panel-install/remove-system disk) If all else, just get a plain copy of an OS from someone.

Actually buying a retail version of the OS would work as well.
