Made a sketch for a painting I plan to make, I am not sure if this is the right pose I will choose so crits would be more than welcomed.
It is important that the pose will be realistic, not a in a romantic way, but simply realistic, just as I were there and took a snapshot of samson ripping that lions jaws off.

Looks like he's got a pretty firm hold on that lion's jaw Besides sampson's hair buggin me it looks pretty sweet. This would look really good in the classical style, realistic skintone, proportions.. etc. I don't remember the story very well, was he in an gladiator arena when he kill the lion?

Pierre: You shouldn't have your page hosted by crosswinds, it's very sloooow and they don't allow images to be displayed on other sites than theirs. |

I'd like to see a little more of the figures - the position of the feet (both Samson and the lion) could add a lot to the drama of the pose. It seems like not showing the legs and feet kind of sacrifices some of the impact it could have.
Also, this is a minor thing, but I get the feeling that Samson's hair is being artificially restricted by the edge of your canvas.
I am looking forward to the painted version though!

Capn,
His hair is supposed to be braided, I know, I didn't get that too well in the sketch. I agree that the classical style is very nice, however I think it is a bit too nice. I would like to do this one with a realistic lighting. Who knows, I may be doing two versions. Samson was not a gladiator, the story of samson is taken from the old testament and he was a "judge", they let their hair grow because that gave them enormous strenghts. He killed the lion in a desert somewhere.
Snake,
I know, I will see what I can do. |

To me, it doesn't look like Samson is showing a lot of emotion...kinda like he kills lions everyday and it's become more of a bore than anything of note...maybe give him a bit more of a frown, or even add some sweat coz he musta had to put in quite a bit of effort to get the lion in that position...
Just a thought |

Nice sketch pierre, the lion's head is lookin good, can't wait to see this one painted.
Hrmm.. Whats with all cynicism bout the bible?? In the past people have been quick to hush up religious threads because of their tendency to flare up, and I've been careful to kinda go along with that a bit and not impose my religious beliefs on others at this forum. And yet I continually see little *pot shots* bein taken at religion, whether it's the all too common statement that *religion has caused so many wars... so people with religious beliefs are stupid cause they always start wars even though the bible talks of kindness towards others* or misrepresenting the bible and stereotyping religion.
Anyway, sorry to get all preachy, I try to respect the wishes of others who have voiced complaints about religion popping up in this forum and for that reason I do my best not impose my beliefs on them. And for the most part I hold my toungue when someone steps all over my beliefs, I hope in the future I'll recieve the same consideration from *others* that participate in this forum.
Ok, now that I've vented a lil steam, I just want to make IT TOTALLY CLEAR that if in some way I MISINTERPRETED several seemingly very sarcastic comments made earlier about the bible, I APOLOGIZE for gettin all touchy bout things. I realize that these comments could also have totally innocent interpretations.
Oh, and nex, holding the mouth of a crocodile APART doesn't work. If you try it you'll lose your fingers. It only works when you hold the mouth closed... :P
And yes I agree that normal people would have a bit of a hard time holding a lions mouth apart.. but God gave Samson a lil help with that.. well, at least until Samson got with the wrong chick and she cut his hair off. |

hehe, if you do a realistic painting out of this one then you'd better not paint him trying to hold the mouth of the lion apart - it works with crocodiles because of their large mouths, but NEVER with lions.
drawing looks very good! any reference used?

Speed3d,
Yes, I agree with you that samson looks a bit relaxed in relation to what he is currently doing, but in some aspects that was a deliberate move by me, tried to catch some of his inner psychology as he was trying to kill the lion, give him the look that he is sure that god is on his side and that he knows who will stand strong after that fight, however, like you said, he seems a bit too relaxed. About the sweat part, it will come, don't worry, it is not something I do in the sketch phase, it will come when all the colors will be applied.
Striker,
Thanks, I can't wait to start painting on it. The biggest problem I have now is the lighting, I can't seem to decide about two things, where samson and the lion will stand relative to the sun (it will be in sunlight) and to my eye. The other thing is that I can't decide how low the sun will be, i.e. what time of day.
PS. on the religion thing. What I have seen and what I think I have seen, this forum seems to have alot of mature members, maybe others, not so mature, or at least they have given that kind of impression. As long as we all respect others, no matter color and beliefs, as long as we do not hurt eachother with our actions, then we will all be able to participate in any kind of healthy discussion, let it be art related or not.

Also we shouldn't discriminate against ppl based on facial hair. Just a point. Like this smiley's little red-dyed goatee...
