I am very interested in learning to drawing realistic people, clothes, and especially expressions. I lost the bookmark to the person who's on this forum that has those drawings of incredibly realistic faces and showed the basic formation of the face. I think I've got that down (doing spheres and construction and so on), but it's the 'what lines of the face to I draw' question that comes into play over and over.

How to render eyes. Sure you can look in the mirror, but what about a person far away....doing a full figure and their face....and so on.

So the question is: If you have pics showing the steps to drawing a realistic face, or links to a good site, or reccomended books on the topic, or pics you're proud of that have good expression or composition...it would be greatly appreciated.

A good example of the style I'm looking for are the figures in the Art of StarWars: Episode 1 book....mostly Doug Chiang's work. But anything from fantasy pics to characters like in Anastasia would help.
(And I did try the search for a topic like this, but couldn't find one....I'm sorry if this is repeated.)

You are probably referring to Fred Flick Stone, who's real name is Ron Lemon. He's an awesome illustrator and designer. Search for his name you'll be amazed. I've learned tons just looking at his samples.

If you wanna focus on figures, study your anatomy from old masters and traditional artists. The style you see in Star Wars or Disney are stylized figures done by artists who already know the basics. Thus, those references are not a good source for figure drawing. I'm sure Fred can help you out more......

Geez feng, thank you for the huge compliment, and thank you opticillusion for the compliment. I just came into this link to see what was going on. I will try to find Villpu's link, he has some beautiful tutorials on the subject. I am still wandering about aimlessly trying to finish my head tutorial also, maybe there should be a part about expressions, since in story telling that is a primary focal point for emotional emphasis...

I'm curious to know where you went to college, if you did because I am currently looking for a good school for illustration and/or animation (computer and traditional). I'm visiting Ringling College of Art and Design tomorrow. Other possibilites are the Art Center and CalArts.

If I went to a school and called it that, I would have to say that it was mostly Jeff Watts art atelier in San Diego, where I teach currently. I took various classes from various schools prior, when a really cool workshop taught by someone really well known was giving it, and I took basic art classes from all over, but no where specific for too long, except Jeff's school.

But in LA, besides art center, there is Associates in Art, and California Art Institute in Thousand Oaks, both of which are bigger versions of our school. These places are the best to go to if you are in So Cal for sure.

There are smaller private schools floating about, but you have to find those via word of mouth.

Cal Art Institute is good? I live in Thousand Oaks, Ive never taken any classes there though. I guess i just take it for granted because its so close, i think it CANT be good, its right next to me heh. I'm looking forward to (hopefully) taking the Master's program at Associated in Art next year. My friend is taking it his 2nd time, and has improved greatly.

Here is a sketch I just did based on a picture of my Grandma after looking at a couple of sites that were listed here. I'm pretty pleased with it, as it is my first try at life drawing.

Any comments would be very helpful

His style is amazing, I have three of his books and my jaw drops everytime i open one. His art just "flows". Makes me wish I lived out in Cali so I could take an actual class from him.

fred, on the tutorial, is there a significant diffrence between male and female faces? because as far as I draw, it took me much longer to learn female faces and the subtle diffrences (cheekbones, chin eyebrows mostly, but still, it's hard to really notice the diffrences unless you look very closely
