This is charcol... I actualy asked you this question in you concept sketch post before, but if you missed it here it is again.
When I use charcole I can't get any variation of tone. IM not sure what type of charcol im using... Or isnt it the charcol its just me?
du have any tips ?
which is better smooth or rough paper?
Im not sure but i think my charcol is too hard... I think I may need softer charcol...
Im using Derwent charcol...
I saw those sketch artist on the street in florence usuing graphite or charcol but the effect was really mad..
some of those guys are awesome artists.... |

well this is just my observation (could be completely wrong), but from what i can see it looks like that really dark shaded stuff would be charcol and the softer lighter tones would be pencil or graphite (same thing i guess). but thats just how i see it |

Hey I work in the same medium Ron does, and it is a Ritmo charcoal pencil sharpened into a long taper and used on smooth newsprint. Ritmo pencils were discontinued and then re-released now they suck(too brittle) try using a Conte charcoal pencil B #1710 I think. It is very difficult to be sutle with charcoal sticks or vine charcoal thats what Rockwell used though so it can be done. The common thing, it seems is to get a good taper on your drawing instrument so as to get a veriety of srokes much like a paint brush. And keep a delicate touch, hard to describe, easier to show, thats one drawback to the forum. Oh yeah and the charcoal pencils are not near as messy.

TENMAN said it best. They are Ritmo on Smooth newsprint. A very soft yes slick surface. Another treatment like this to try would be Prisma color on Vellum or marker paper. THat is what the concept girl art is done in.
Experiment with everything. SOmetimes we don't like how are stuff turned out, but the idea is there. Swithcing up the supplies you use can sometimes remedy this. It gets a bit pricey, but once you hit that pot of gold, you will become a whole new artist. Good luck with it... ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |
