They're sort of tiny though
This is a set of images I made for the website of a mobile fishing game. The idea is that you can "fish" on your mobile phone and then go to the website to admire your catch, so all the fish in the game need little pictures. The originals are 832 pixels wide btw, the magic of downscaling...
Well, I realize most of these are completely crappy as paintings (they were done very quickly as you might guess). I wouldn't have posted this stuff otherwise, but I haven't posted anything new for quite a while so it made for a funny subject

Those are pretty nice. Almost look like they could be a set of collectors' stamps or something, at that scale.
So can you really catch the loch-ness monster and a mermaid in this game? What kind of bait do you use? |

hi saffron,
again you rule so you said you've been downscaling, would it possible to email me some of your work with the 1:1 scale? especialy the octopusy, the shark, the scotish dinosaur and the alien? i'd really appreciate, you can either email them to me, or simply post'em here, i'd be glad.
after having watched those thumbnails, i can only say that you've got one of the most powerful taste when it comes to color scheme... i mean it!
much respect

just so happens I painted this for a friend this weekend... took 20 minutes... I hate how sketchy it looks but the friend liked it

those fishes looks nice. Mind posting the bigger ones Or, will they eat up the small ones .
Btw, a question about painter again. I made a picture some time ago, but when I tried again no, I've experienced a few "problems"
1. after being used to phshop, the pressure is actually quite painful fo my hand. Is there some way to make this easier ? I tried to chnge the pressure setting, but that's not enough.
2. when using the brushes. 1, either the brushes blend to much or too little. Like camel hair, don mix much even though I try to paint with very little pressure. But, then it's the wet brushes that blends like pshop smudge almost. Which brush and pressure and other settings are you using ? I did it so easily last time, but now it's just horrible to work with ?!?
3. every damn brush seems to look crap with a small brush size. how the heck do I manage to get the smallest details in. It's the same as when painting in real life, and the brush is old and worn out and the hairs are sticking out everywhere instead of giving one fine line...it's the same damn thing.
4.also, I'm running on a 900mhz pc with 640mb ram, and it's still framing. which brush settings is best to turn down without loosing too much of the quality ?
sorry, I just got so frustrated yesterday. Any answers would be really appreciated.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I didn't make it quite clear that this is the intended size for these pics, so the big originals look very messy indeed, as they were made with downscaling in mind. I can still post a couple of them if someone wants, but they're definitely not pretty
shahar, that's a cute fish, I like the sketchy look. It looks a little flat, but maybe it's a flat fish
kig, of course! A fishing game without a Swedish submarine would be like a foggy day without the moon... or something like that
Joachim, I'll try to help you with your Painter woes, here we go:
1.
There's two ways to control pressure sensitivity: the first one is a Painter feature that can be found at Edit->Features->Brush Tracking. Here, it's the pressure settings you want to modify. I think "pressure scale" just linearly scales the pressure curve, whereas "pressure power" modifies the "hump" of the curve, but I'm not sure.
The problem with Brush Tracking is that the settings aren't saved when you quit Painter, which is rather idiotic (but it's possible that's just a problem with my Painter installation or something). So, if you want your pressure settings to stay, you have to modify your Wacom's settings in Control Panel->Wacom tablet->Tip Feel. ("More Options" will show the pressure curve, which is rather useful) The problem here is that these settings affect all your programs, not just Painter. Nothing is perfect...
2.
Blending is controlled by the two Well settings, resat and bleed. Resat means how much your brush gives color and how much it picks up from the image - if you set Resat to 0%, the brush won't give any color itself. Bleed controls the level of smearing - the higher you set bleed, the more quickly your brushstroke gets blended with the colors on your image. So, setting bleed to 100% is like painting wet on wet - everything gets smeared very quick.
For pressure sensitivity to affect blending, you'll have to set at least bleed to pressure (try putting the mark to "invert" too) in the Expression panel. If you set resat to pressure, you'll get a brush that smears at low pressure and paints at high pressure.
3.
For a camel hair type brush (you can change your brush type in the "dab type" box in the General panel), try setting "feature" in the Size panel way down, maybe to below 2 or something. For a static bristle type brush, change "hair scale" in the Bristle panel to a smaller value, and try playing with the "thickness" value too.
Or you can just use a small airbrush or a circular brush. A circular brush is exactly the same as the basic paintbrush in Photoshop, but you can still have it affected by the cool Painter variables if you want to (like Well, Random and the Expression controllers) - pretty useful I think.
4.
See above - if you want the fastest possible brush, it's circular (try taking down the Spacing settings if it's lagging behind your cursor). In general, the rendered brushes (like camel hair) are slower than the dab-based ones (like circular, static bristle and captured).
I hope you'll keep playing with Painter even though it got you frustrated, it's a very powerful program in the end. But I guess you've heard that propaganda line already too many times

Thx a LOT sfr,
I will try these things out as soon as I get home. Exactly the things I wanted to know. Maybe I will manage to keep my patience with painter afterall... I know it's a really great program, I just didn't manage to enjoy it since it was so painful to work with when being used to phshop.
thx again!

Those are nice!
Do you oil paint professionally in real life? Are you the guy that did the Plesiosaurus that can be found at http://www.prehistory.com/plesiosa.htm ?
If so, it looks like you shrunk the image and stamped/blurred the area to remove the second Plesio to recycle the image.
Here's the stuff:
(I hope all the images come out ok, I never have luck with forums...) |

Damn, you're absolutely right Patrick!! I'm _very_ embarrassed. It was supposed to be a placeholder, but I simply forgot about it.
Here's what happened: I made a bunch of these images already back in June. The game was going to be demonstrated to a potential client and it needed to have more weird fishes for that, but there was no time to make a new one, so I dug up a suitable monster pic from my hard disk for use in the demo. Then I went to work on other stuff for a couple of months, I had lots of things on my mind, and when I finally got back to these I had just completely forgot about the monster pic placeholder.
I'm really ashamed, my apologies to all of you and to the original painter... I'll have to make a new creature to replace that image asap.
I just want to say that I'm definitely not in the habit of doing this kind of thing. I've never practiced painting over scanned pictures or anything like that, and as far as I can remember this is the first time I've borrowed someone else's picture. But it's all my fault it slipped this far I'm very sorry to cause yet another ripping scandal in this forum...

we've seen what you can do, i personally don't think *you* ever need to use someone else's pic so i'm convinced about what you say, it's a sampler that slipped. anyway, it's happened to me before too, i was painting some feathery angel wings and i put in someone's pic for the body. i was totally focused on it being a feathers painting excercise and posted my creation on a forum, totally forgetting about the body i had pasted there! i removed the body and replaced it with my own painting.
