was visiting craig mullins' site earlier, and came across a link to this forum. was a pleasant surprise; i found the signal/noise ratio to be pretty good. constructive criticism, with actual here-check-this-out-and-change-it-if-you-want. brought a smile to my face and made me remember that i used to do this stuff for a living, too.
anyways, i dragged out an old mac gathering dust in a corner, found an old keyboard and (heh) a one button mouse, plugged it into the network and grabbed this painting.
it was painted over the course of a year (whenever i had some time), as a background image for a game called "Reflexion." it was supposed to be the sequel to a game i'd released the year before, Troubled Souls. it's actually several images, which were merged to create the final bit. the fingers on the right hand are the player's 'lives'. everytime you would lose a life, a spark would shoot out of the orb above the hand onto a little guillotine around the finger and chop it off.
anyways, to make a tedious story short, after i finished this piece and made the fingers animations, the whole thing got shelved and i moved on to other things. it's just been sitting on various hard drives all these years, so i figured i'd just release it. people here seem to like this kind of stuff. :)
constructive criticism welcomed.

Wow interesting
May I ask you what kind of software you used back then ?
comment: Hmm it seems the skull & mutilated hand on the right aren't as 'sharp' as the other hand on the left of the image. Looks like the later got more of your attention/time

photoshop, mostly the brush tool. the outlines were painted to mask channels first in b&w, and then the highlights, shadows. the background image behind everything took 9 months alone. i'll see if i can dredge that up as well.
it was before pshop had layers and all those fancy compositing features... ;)

all: thanks!
egerie:
i'll see if i can dredge up the skull and arm paintings. they're on an external scsi hard drive in a box somewhere. some of the detail was lost when i added the cast shadows.
