This is a sketch I done today in Photoshop. Took me about 3 hours to finish. I used photo reference for the lion.
I like the quality of my sketches, seem to be too tight in the finished piece. It is something I am working on, delivering the fresh quality of the sketches into the final artwork, and still have it look like a final product.
Can anyone relate to that?

Hehe pretty cool.. with the wings this way it looks like there's some sort of giant bat melted into the lion, and that the bat is trying to fly off one way while the lion is very pissed off and trying to stay on the ground :-P
It looks good when zoome out. Thought of using hard edged brushes like spooge? Try that for your next pic :-P

That is cool, a giant bat melted into the lion. didnt think of that lol, but it kind of looks that way for sure. gross science fiction. You gave me an idea for a great fantasy/science fiction painting with your remark.

I like it! I can totally relate with what you are talking about re: sketches vs. the final product. I am currently working on a picture... when i first started it, it was pretty loose and sketchy and I liked it. Now I've been adding detail and cleaning it up, and it has an almost surgical cleaness, not too much of the original loose brush work. But I like it that way too.
oh well! |

Cool, that is pretty nice. I like the lighting and tones. You might want to shrink the image down a little more. Would look a little more realistic. |

nice stuff. I like the scratchy feel of the image. It fits the lion really nice.
My only suggestion is to fix the wings, they are backwards. You have the membrain onthe wrongside of the arms.
The whole image has a nice quality of movement to it.
Try to stay away from using dodge and burn and work with color instead. It looks like you used D&B in some places, if you didn't then try using a harder brush for some of your highlights.
Your work doesn't have be all nice and neat to be good. I like this the way it is. It has character. Now you need to start thinking of composition, where you want things placed, what to crop in on and what to leave out. Keep us posted on how it goes.
good luck.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't use dodge and burn, my motto has always been, what you can't do with pure colors, you can't do by any other tools and/or effects. I think that the dodge and burn quality of this sketch is rooted in the fact that I used the lighting effects in the filter library to add some fast contrast to it. I hardly never do that when I am working with finla piece, only in my sketches.

About the wings, , yeah, you are so right, I didn't even see that they were bacwards, were too concentrated in the painting process. Thanks.

ok, I shrunk the image a bit so that the values melt together smoother. (i didnt have acces to photoshop so I used ms paint to shrink it down, most of you guys probably are aware that ms paint dont have a very good size/resize function.)
