Im working with fixing some of the bugs in this pic, ive enlarged the head some, changed his elbow and made the muscles look more realistic (i think) What i dont know is if his shoulder is correct, that area is pretty damn hard to get accurate, what do you think of it?
And just for everybodys record, its a gladiator (therefore the light clothing) not a barbarian (or is it the samre thing)?

I like that picture, but there are some things I would work on. In my opinion the skin needs another color. You just used grey and this skin-color. Maybe you should add some orange or yellow.
The metall maybee would look better if you use stronger Contrasts and some things reflecting in it.
I think I can't explain what I mean in English but,...? |

The biggest problem for me is that my monitor is seriously fucked up, the colours is warmer on that one, but on my monitor at work its much cooler, it pisses me off, also i can only run it in 800*600 rez, else it starts screaming and make me relly mad. How about the shoulder? does it look ok.
Ohh, can i make the colours warmer with some tool in photoshop, rather then painting the whole thing again. |

Nil900, you explained it perfect, nice english, wouldnt of known you were german if i had not looked at where you are from
i pretty much agree with what he said, also one legs longer then the other, you have a coule dark darks, now add some bright highlights.also on things like his horn, dont make it a flat gradient, put a highlight on the bottomside of the horn, and put a dark core in the middle-underside of it to make it more 3d looking.
(note: yes im aware 'dark dark' and 'bright highlights' are redundant)

How about that skintone, i just pulled some sliders in photoshop. I just need to correct some of the highlights, at least its alot warmer. And im still concerned about that shoulder.

the shoulder is ok
but i still don't like the skintone...
it can be cold or warm but it needs volume.. 3dimensionality... to achieve this you must first of all remove all the black lines
then.. on shadow sides tones must be more cold... and you have to do this with brush tool not by just pulling some sliders
check some boris vallejo's works for skintones...or maybe some pornosites :P |

I agree with ime: remove the black lines on the bright side of the character. I also would reduce the black lines around the vaines (?).In my opinion two different colored lights might help. One nearly white (or whatever) from left and another one (just a small highlight-line) as a "frame"? coming from the right back.
The shoulder looks a little strange. I think the breast muscle (is that right? or does breast always mean boobs, hehe) is... I don't know I'll show you. |

Here it is. See what I mean? I changed the helmet and the light. I think it looks a little better now, hm don't know. Perhaps you should ask better ones than me for critics?!

Kebab: I like the newer version better. But I agree with everyone else's comments, you could really stand to add some cool colors in the shadows. An easy way to do this (not quite as easy as moving sliders ) is make a new layer, set it either to "color" or "hue" mode, then paint over your shadows with a blueish brush. It'll add a lot.
Another thing you might look at (which would take a lOT more work to fix) is the fact that the light source seems to be coming straight on from his left, which isn't something you see all that often. If you were to draw him with a light source that was farther up, you could add some more interesting highlights and shadows on his chest and legs, and get a much more dynamic feel to the picture. (Right now all of his skin is lit evenly, which isn't the most exciting.) |

I think the head is actually a bit too big. Usually when you're doing big guys doing heads that are slightly smaller just tends to make them seem even bigger. Not necessarily a bad thing, I think.
I think the biggest problem is the torso area and the fact that your pectoral (chest) muscles, don't move up enough with the arm. The pecs are connected to the shoulder and thus move up with it, check in the mirror!
Anyhoo, here's a super quick rough for the structure. I don't have my anatomy book with me so it might be a bit off, and if someone with more skill could add the correct muscles for the arm I would love to see it!
Otherwise, nice work! Hope it helps.

Ok, well, originally I was going to have something constructive to say about the painting technique and composition, but then as I started my re-paint I realized it just sucked. I grabbed Liquid's sketch, and worked on top of that, because I thought that was an excellent beginning.
I think maybe you should work on pose & proportion and basic forms(determining your lightsource) before working in the tones personally. Here is the crappola I ended up with after about 20 minutes.
Look at Flexible Elf's stuff. He is great at drawing Dark Ages type armor. I ripped that too. Just call me Threnody....

Just wanted to put some more detail and color on this. Guess I can't leave well enough alone. ARgh.
I'm going to start a new thread with this though. I would love to get someone else to fix the head and anatomy, since I'm obviously running into trouble...
