AS the topic says, Im having trouble drawing wings on a person who faces you completely.
Wings from his back, I want them ni the un-opened stated that a normal might have when walking around and such.... Any ideas or reference photos that might help ? Thanks. Ill try to post what im doodlin' on to show you how I try it. |

excuse my amateur advice ^^;
u can search for pictures of angels on the net, or u can fool around with drawing the closed wing until u get something satisfactory, or u can think of the wing in terms of bones and joints and how the feathers would overlap each other...
i find it very difficult to draw angel wings because i tend to make them look like just one layer of feathers that are completely flat...
anyway, i hope this helps a bit |

Draw the bone structure first, try to visualize what would be psysically possible and probable for wings in the rest position.
It occurs to me that the outermost portion of the wing would overlap the inner portion from the back view.
Thats probably all very obscure advice but I hope I helped in some way.

I agree with Rob M's post in that you have to get the overlaying shape correct and make sure they overlay correctly.
Below is an image that I did of an angel. It is nothing great (as it isn't 100% finished as I want to properly colour it) but might give you a few ideas. For mine, what I find wrong with the image is that the wings don't look big enough for the character - it isn't 100% convincing that those wings could carry the body weight. The shape of each individual 'feather' looks to sculped. Hopefully you can have a look at the image and start to see what might work and what might not. Just a suggestion.

How to draw _____:
In this case angels. Or Djin, depending on your culture. Since they can be hard to pin down, I recomend using something more readly available... say... humm... a bird. Where I live (Mississippi) you can find them fairly frequently on the side of the road. Take one home, pose it as you need. Stick it in a plastic bag, and pop it in the freezer. Refer to it as necessary.

Here are my pics that I have drawn so far. First pic is old stuff. Last 2 are the one's I've been drawing within the last week. Sorry about the size, I'm still learning how to use my scanner after I've had it for over 2 years.

Yeah, I'd recommend using a bird as reference, though having a road-kill carcass in your freezer isn't quite what I had in mind
A biology book that has a bird skeleton diagram and maybe muscle structure too would be good, and drawing some birds (I was thinking seagulls, ducks, swans and the like, maybe crows for a dark angel thingy) from nature would be good too.
just my little thoughts from my little mind.

Go to my site. It MIGHT give you some Ideas. I just realized I have a Metric Tonne of Angel pics in the color section. I never really put too much effort into making them look too realistic. but you might find something handy.

Copy Birds DIRECTLY. It was said before, but this seems imperitive. you won't get away with feathers hanging from sticks.
If you look at the muscles in a mans back (medical dictionary) and the muscles in a birds wings, you can find a way to connect them. I should try this actually...hmm...thank you! |

I saw a pic once by some biomechanics wiz of the kind of anatomy it would take to get a human being to be able to merely glide. Since birds have things like hollow bones and nearly half their body weight is devoted to their pectoral muscles people don't stand a chance. The wings would be batlike in look and basically be dumb extensors. The wingspan would be about 15 metres and most of their structure would be for locking them into place against the turbulent air. And that just barely might be able to give us some gliding capability. To actually flap would require incorporating our arms and growing massive muscle groups and bone structures to put them on to move the things effectively; covering the entire front torso. This also means a huge reduction in the weight of our legs is necessary and even then the weight of the new muscle mass to move the wings properly might be too heavy for us to fly anyway.
To have them as separate limbs? hmm, better start working on some machine that can do it for you.
*ahem* don't worry about all that. it's just fun to think about now and then. They are fun to draw on people though. I agree with what others were saying; Study the real thing, and don't forget that avarian wings have a mass to them that the feathers grow out of. |

Hey Muzman, good point their. It's as though our expectations of what angels look like have been influenced by the television culture of today...
Although, Blizzard did an interesting interpretation of angel wings in Diablo 2.
You know wing made of cosmic energy, not of physical matter. Just another pointless thought, being thrown into the void...

mm the wings in diablo 2 .. they're more like tentacles but they look sick
yeah thats a good idea... if it does not necessarily have to be wings like a bird why dont you try a different type of wings?. hehe.. well goodluck!

So, Muzman, what you saying is that birds have it right and that we should stick to flying with big pieces of metal that propel themselves with fire?

This is my Girlfriends coloring job, done on a page of angel sketches by Sam Liu.
This is her first time using photoshop to colorize something.
Not bad eh?

There sure are a lot of Sydney-siders here- four in one post so far! Ha- we should have some beers together one night. hmm, then again- half of you are probably 14 or somethin' hehe I'd really like to meet Grant from AL though...
Ah, about the wings... hmmm... look at how birds wings fold up and try to duplicate that in your work. Would be the most logical thing to do.

Big-G : ooooooook.........
anyhoo, am in the state of poverty right now, being 17 and having no job, and having just spend all my money on 3 birthday presents for my friends, i cannot goto Chapters and buy an anatomy book. So I went to my school library, and found that Eyewitness books are excellent for visual aids! I got the Eagle and Birds Of Prey book, and the Birds book. Time to go practice my wings. Thanks for all the help!

Hey, you don't suck!
Make sure you think of everything as the shapes of the muscles, and always keep an eye on the position of your light source.
I did a quick mock-up for reference. Its pretty sloppy but I hope the idea comes across...
Hope that helps...
