I think the answer might be yes.
I live in So Cal. There are several State Universities in here, inclusing Cal Poly Ponoma. There are also private art institutes. And their tuitions are murder. When we have state-funded polytech university, why not state-funded art colleges? Other countries have state-funded art institutes and why not in America?
My idea: Shrink art departments in State Universities and divert the budget to establish art-driven public colleges.For that kind of specialized field, such kind of treatment is necessary. Not all folks who can draw are from some rich families. (read: few Black and Hispanic students in art schools...)
I am neither a black or hispanic but I am really intrigued if the government provide quality art education to all ethnicities equally. State-funded art institutes will offer affordable tuition plan to most (maybe 99%) of art students. And in California, entertainment industry generates huge revenue. -_-;
Art education can be affordable. No, it has to be. Give everyone the chance and let the tough curriculum sort them out. Duh. |

I agree with the fact that it should atleast be some kind of funding for schools of the arts! Funny how people always try a put caps or culture-titles on the arts....degrating it...not recognizing freelance artist as employed individuals....labeling certain genres based on something from the past....blah blah....but in reality without the arts what would they have. That means no designers and so on...meaning no commercial and prolic merchandise.
But hell there's always a good side of things. That's why there's scholarships and paydates. For those of you not familiar with pay dates...it's when a employer (let's say pixar) sends out a scout who may hire you straight out of highschool, meaning once you get a degree you already have a job with them and they pay either half or all of you tutions....if you fail you owe them! So somethings are limited but that just means only the best will sqeeze through.
The other disturbing thing though is the wealth issue. It pisses me off to know that alot of fine artist out there....will miss out just because of wealth, race and/or creed!!! That's fucked, but that's life....what do you do but live with it and live through it. I had it hard enough being mixed between two races...but hell I'm still living out my dreams! Life is fucked...so is the average person....

I think private art schools will lobby their ass off to stop states from iniciating state-funded art institutes...We need more participation for this subject... |

I'm rather upset that this thread is almost off the page, with 2 replies.. this is really kinda important. I intend to go to an Art college in the very near future, and I do not come from a wealthy family.. I'm guessing when I move to Minneapolis for college, I'm going to end up using canvas as my roof on a street corner, that is, whenever I'm not in school or working 18 hours a day just so I can afford things. And yeah, I can qualify for financial aid, but we all know how that seems to go...
