Hiya all! As many others seem to have, Ive been visiting this forum for quite a while, but I havent drawn anything worth posting until now... ^^ Anyways, Ive drawn an Anime-inspired character (since Im quite an anime-fan heh) which came out quite well I think.

Oh well.. Hope this works now... here goes:

I started with a quick sketch wich I traced with my wacom, and then made the rest in Photoshop!

Comments are very welcome!

I think you should use thinner lines for the head... and maybe make the shading a bit less blurry... hmm...

Titties aren't the same size, one seems a bit round the other looks very flat, her right arm is very unproportionned, her hair is plain weird, her ear is too high, her torso is too far on the left, signature WAY too big, awful shading, left boot shaded as if there was a left light, and right boot shaded as if there was a right light, etc. Anyhoo, spend 12 hours on it instead of 12 minutes! Thanks

I guess 12 minutes was a bit harsh, but I wrote 12 minutes as a figure of speech.. People on nice pics can put up to like 30 hours on a pic. Don't be sad I wrote supposedly "evil" comments, just look at other very good pictures and compare it to yours and try to find out why his is better than yours. That way you'll KNOW for sure what to do and not do and become a great artist.

Thanks Tinusch! ^_^

Well Ill just keep on trying then hehe...

Another thing I find really difficult is getting the right body proportions... What about the pic I posted? Do you think they are fairly close to reality? (With the comic-look in mind)

hey ramdac
well.. ive got some good sites which show how to do body proportions.. once i get enough time ill try to make my own hompage with a few tutorials but for now.. www.polykarbon.com www.jdillon.net

i posted these somewhere else ebfore..
these are very good.. dunno if everyone else draws like this but its more like.. circles and stick figures .. to get the rough over view and then u draw in the details later..
anyway.. spli the eyes up more.. they seem to be too .. close.. usually put a space for another eye between the two.. overall nice pic.. and when shading put like a dot wehre you awnt the source of light and then try to picture how it would hit the character / person / thing.. and then rub it out afterwards.. well goodluck

Well, here's some encouragement for you.

For a beginner, that's pretty good. As far as the shading, well, it's not GREAT, but again, most beginners start out this way. The shading might seem a little blotchy here and there, and it might be kind of hard to get the right look where you want it, but that's normal for people just getting started. Don't give up because of what others tell you. Most people start out with pics not nearly as good as yours, so you're already off to a good start. As Snake said, just keep observing other people's pics and incorporating different elements into your technoque and style, and soon you'll be much more comofrtable with PS and be able to achieve whatever effect you're looking for.

Burn and dodge are great tools, but they were originally used for emphasis on already existing photographs. For shading you're actually making work for yourself by using them. I know how ya feel, I love the colour gradients they make too. But they're very difficult to control and since their effect is cumulative it's really easy to mush everything into darkeness or blow it right out to yellow or white. Not to mention they're very soft and gaussian in effect no matter how hard the brush you're using (this goes back to their photographic origins too), so you'll end up spending the most time fixing that blotchyness that comes from trying to control overlapping burns/dodges.
Believe me, you're better off getting the hang of using colour to shade now rather than later, particularly with comic style.

The picture is showing signs of being really good. The proportions are a bit off and to my mind they are for the following reasons:

1) Right arms tapers off to be too small. Look how big it is at the shoulder compared to the wrist. Sure it won't be consistant but it won't vary as much as you have it doing.

2) Boobs - her left one doesn't join into the underarm properly - it appears to be too far to the right

3) The waist, looks too much like a cylinder with pretty straight lines. Try to get them curving a little.

4) The legs compared to one another are different sizes. Try to get them to be similar.

5) The heel on her right boot comes up too soon. It doesn't look like it will be able to support her weight.

These are just suggestions but keep pluggin' away at it and I'm sure you'll come up with some great images (love the attitude in this one)

A few things that might improve the pic.
1:Have a specific lightsourse. It will make the picture more convincing right away. Also a shadow under her will add weight AND depth to the character.
2: Study anatomy more, No one can get enough of this.Even if the picture were meant to look cartoony, it's still have to look convincing.
3:Almost none of the outer lines connects with the inner lines, causing the shapes to look flat. An example is especially the hair and torso. Also try to keep the thickness of the lines the same allover. Now for example the hair is sticking out too much
from the rest
4:Study folds and clothing more. A little mistake on the clothing and the rest will suffer.

Hope this can help
Micke
