Hello,
The artists here are amazing. You all are doing things far beyond what I'm doing and what I've seen on many other boards.
You are doing alot of things I'd like to be doing, so I'm going to start showing my face here, a little bit.
I do mostly digital coloring. I want to try doing full digital painting, but I'm not quite ready. For now, I'm working with other peoples pencils and inks. Occasionally, I use my own, but I'm not that good with lineart.
Here is my latest coloring. http://www.geocities.com/seraphirecafe/color/crimson11cover.jpg
I use Ps 4.0 and a mouse. And I've been doing this for 4 months. (By newbie, I meant to this board.)
I also have recently tried to start a coloring monthly. I'm not sure if anyone is entering, but I'm mentioning it anyway.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on my piece.

WHOA! is that your own line art? if it isn't, you should really get out of the habit of coloring other people's stuff and do your own cause if you persue a career in graphic arts not many employers are going to hire someone who can just color over someone who can color AND do line art. Am i right guys?
overall, nice pic. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

No, Its not my own lineart. Yeah, I know, though. I'm practicing my own pencils and such, but I'm not that good at that yet. So I'm doing what I can for now.
That is drawn by Humberto Ramos. It is a cover of the comic book, Crimson.

Welcome Seraphire.
The coloring you did isn't bad at all! There are others here who are into and are experienced in coloring, I'm sure you'll find some people here able to help you. The comment made about drawing your own stuff is, well, ideal, but if you feel comfortable learning this than go right ahead. Usually, people learn to draw by forms/shapes/linework, then colors, then lighting/shadowing. Good luck with your work!
cheers!

Seraphire- welcome
Colouring looks ok. I would avoid using the airbrush like you are tho. Use seections and the airbrush instead of just putting a stroke in the middle of the lines. select the area and then get a big brush and paint with it half outside the selection. you'll get a nice clean edge this way as opposed to making everything lighter as it comes towards the viewer. there isn't much light direction if you do it the way you have.
Hmmm...not very good at explaining things. Where did you get that line art btw. If you send it to me I might be able to show you what I mean. Anyway You can have a look at a little tut I did in the thread called "this was a lot of fun" should be floating around somewhere. Might help. I like hte colour choices you've got there.

Yeeha! I walked into this topic expecting a newbie first-time attempt at coloring and what do I find? A comic-book quality coloring, very sharp and with an illustration is FULL of energy of pose and placement.
Thanks for the surprise Seraphire. I REALLY dig the explosion behind the two fighters!!!!!!
And like Frost says, the next step is lighting and shadowing. For instance, light from the magical fire illuminating both of the figures skins and casting a faint orange shadow (the shadow would be very thin and faint since the light source is so close!)
Of course, this image doesn't need it. I like how the two figures stand out! I do!
Oh, and the only difference between a comic-style illustration like your own and a digital painting is the exclusion of black lines and the eye for lighting and shading, so your 75% already.
Goto www.3dpalette.org and click on the Craig Mullens tutorial. That'll show ya what ya need. |

Thanks for all the replys.
Rinaldo,
I know how to do "cuts". Which is what your describing. I used them in various places on this. I do get lazy sometimes and others I just like the look off the airbrush. On the armor, this time was laziness. I'm not happy with the outcome there. I got the lineart at http://crimson.crawlspace.com/relics.html
Sergenth,
Sorry about the confusion. I thought it might be misleading after the fact. but hey I am still pretty new.
I did do secondary lighting also. I guess the consensis is that I didn't do enough if so many are commenting that it needs it.
Thanks alot.
