http://www.tbns.net/billyjay/worm.jpg

This was drawn after an idea I had! I wanted to color this in Photoshop, but each time I try I mess it up. The only way it looks decent is in black and white.

The way I tried coloring it, was with capacity levels set rellw. Which made the colors very bismal.

Any ideas for coloring this guy?

If you try coloring it yourself I will add it to my website if you don't mind. So please any tips, or show me what you can do with would be great.

Thanks!
BJ

what the heII?! Sorry, not sure if you're going for this, but that emense testica- I mean tentacle doesn't...its coming out of his...it IS his...What do intend this picture to be doing? Is he a shadow from which evil things are coming? cause if so, they would look better coming out of his chest.
That way it won't look like his Bazzoka Joe, and no one will think Wang, Penis, Tremendous Shlong or any of the others you can think of.

All you have to do is clarify that he's facing away from us. It'll avoid confusion that way.

HAHAHA!

Hey, it's coming out of both sides, so that should make it less pornographic. It is not one of those, it is simply big ass tenicles coming from his stomach and back area.

I have been told that before, but I promise that is not what it looks like. If it was, you wouldn't tell him to his face anyways.

LOL.

Thanks for the comments....
now how do I go about coloring this guy?

Awesome thanks a lot for that tut link. But, how do you want me to do it? Make the initial outline from the drawing and discard all the details and simply pretty much start over in color?

That may take me a while especially since I only know how to do a few things in photoshop.

I have no idea how some of you guys can create things so fast that look so darn good.

Thanks for the help!

You should be able to just copy and paste the image you have now into your alpha channel and start from there. If don't know much about Photoshop, this would be a great opportunity to learn how to paint in PS.
Give it a try, what do you have to lose, other than the time it takes to learn a new technique.
good luck.

Funny stuff guys!

Yeah, I've always watched this board and wanted to get involved. Finally I signed up, I love this place. I can't wait to get cracking on the photoshop version of this wormy dude.

I really liked that tutoral thing, even though I could never do anything that compares to the storm trooper dude that tutoral guy did. Man that was awesome.

Hopefully I'll come up with something decent. And hopefully soon!

Thanks for all the help!

"I have been told that before, but I promise that is not what it looks like"

Hehehe! you're the man. If that's not what it looks like, why do people tell you it does?

I would open it up in PS, set the brush on 'opacity' and start filling in the blanks. Give him a nice background too (in another layer) He could be standing on the apex of a mountain overlooking a valley, or in the middle of a battle field (calm and collected while people run in fear of his...) , or he could be in strip club, whipping it around the room and taking peoples heads off.
Hehehehe!
hope the serious parts of this help a little. The best thing to do is just experiment, play around. Make a few copies of this and try different techniques. YOUR technique is best for YOUR pictures.

I tried coloring this guy using the tutoral. It's harder that you'd think. I gotta figure a way to get more clear details. Any help? I don't mind the background to use for the pic, but I need ideas for detailing the worm part. Any good ideas?

Thanks!

AAAHHHH!!!!! Quick somebody stop him before its too late!!!!
*breathe*
Okay, rule number 5 of the do's and don'ts: Never ever ever ever ever use filters. Filters are satan. They scream PHOTOSHOP BEGINNER!! Even if you are one, thats no excuse. Never use them.

Set your brush to whatever opacity needed, and PAINT a background. Pretend your Wacom is nothing more than a paintbrush and canvas, with never ending paint.
this way you will make much more natural looking pictures, and we won't have to stone you for comiting the cardinal sin of photoshop.

Hope i didn't come on too strong, and if its too late to paint over, oh well, whatcha gonna do? Just for future reference.

DEATH TO FILTERS! Whoohooohooohooohooo!!
*runs off into the night howling...*

Well I will have to get a WACOM and get back to you.

HA

I don't have one yet, and havn't planned to get one any time soon. But I would like to get one sometime. I guess I'll have to stick to mouse or just scan stuff in and alter.

Any ideas how to get a really good cheap wacom?

Otherwise I'll wait til' I got back home this summer before I get one!

Thanks!
BJ

LOL @ Isric

hahah, I totally agree wwith you aboout filter useage. Although I highly reccomend adding a huge, overpowering lense flare to all of your images to make them look more professional, trust me! *snicker*

Ok - it's fine to tell the beginners that 'filters are EVIL! Avoid them like the plague!' but this isn't really true.
Filter can be incredibly useful if you know how to control them. If need an effect, and can use the filter to do this effect quickly and subtly, you should. The key is not to let the filter take over and be obvious in the piece. One of the best ways to do with is with the 'Fade' function - even a horribly filter can look good at 10%, or 10% lightened or difference.
What everyone is warning you against is a lack of sublety - obvious filters that were slapped on without thinking. The most abused is probably lens flares. Erg. Awful.
So anyway - just avoid them for the time being, and then slowly, slowly learn to control them.
Also - filters are an excelent way of creating textures should you need marble, stone, bark, oil etc. Then just stack thiry or so, mostly faded in the difference channel.

Little interesting anecdote here, hope it's not too off-topic. I made it to the bookstore yesterday (for the first time in many months), and noticed that they had re-designed the covers for Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara series. I don't know if anyone has read it, it's pretty much a re-hash of Tolkein's books, but it's still pretty good. But I digress. On the cover of the first book, right near the top, is a big old Photoshop lens flare. Ugh.

It's not quite as obvious here as it is in print, but STILL... I guess, from a totally subjective standpoint, it really doesn't look THAT bad. It's just that I've seen that damned thing too many times.

Oh, and billyjay, your worm guy still looks like he has a mega-schlong. But hey. If you ever want to get a job doing anime, you can include this in your portfolio.

Man, i love terry brook's books especially the Scions of Shannara series, but I'm just reading the new one Isle Witch, and it sucks big time.

Not recommended at all.

BillyBob, or BillySue...ah, BillyJay, I agree with newt. Use filters wisely, and as little as possible.
A deadly tool they are, yes. Be mindful of the filters you must, the dark side of photoshop they are. Once to the filters you turn, forever will they dominate your destiny...
