WindowsMe is definately not the next step up from Windows98.. they shouldnt even charge for it, but thats microsoft. All they really did was fix a few bugs, insert multiplayer crap into the card games that come with windows, and make it so there's an "undo" button for hardware/settings changes. Dont get WindowsME if you want to use it for 3D Modelling.. its not intended for that. Get Windows2000 or something, since it's more intended for workstation uses, and will better manage your memory for such purposes.. oh, and it wont crash every day either.

Also, if you're at all interested in Maya, it only runs in NT and 2000. |

I think ME is fine. I've run it for about 3 weeks now no problems, but I have 3d studio max....I just upgraded to win2000
I didn't have problems with ME, but I know the NTFS is much more stable than fat32......so if you can afford it get win2000

3d Max and Maya works great on Win2k. I had some GL issues at first, but they seemed to be fixed with Service Pack 1. Personally I try not to use Win98, so Win ME will probubly never see the light of day on my computer |

From the tests we did here on our render servers running MaxR3, Win NT4.0 out performed Win2000 by a huge margin. Rendering files was nearly 300% faster in winNT4.0 averaged over a period of a few weeks. Stay away from Win2K. It'll take your big, bad dual processor machine and turn it into a single processor pup. |

I can say that Win95/98 is not created for 3d applications at all - it's made to be compatible with everything, at the cost of stability. It still supports old 16-bit code, and does not have protected memory (so a program can crash the whole OS).
WinNT was made to be a very, very stable kernel from the beginning - it only supports 32-bit code, programs run in their own protected memory space (so a program can't crash the whole OS) etc. It's made to be stable.
Win2k is still the same NT kernel with a lot of functionality implimented, so people can do a lot more that they couldn't in NT. I switched from NT to 2k and Max was more stable, viewport redraw was faster, and rendering was about 10% slower. But now in 2k I now have DirectX, can play games etc. I've been really happy with it so far.
In fact - Win2k has been running for two months, and not a single crash.
