A MUD (multi-user dungeon) is a text-based game where players can take on a different identity and mold their character into whatever they wish. They're like adventure games with themes ranging anywhere from fantasy to the future. Some are all about role-playing and some are just about killing things to get stronger.
I know text-based sounds a little tedious, but they're really quite enjoyable once you get used to it. Leaves a lot to the imagination.
There are also some graphical MUD type games around such as Ultima Online and Everquest.

I used to play "Realm" realmserver.com, but it got too time consuming. I usually don't get into the text mud very often, i guess I don't have to much of an imagination. (Realm was a GMUD BTW).
