well im not sure if i have this exactly correct, but a matte painting is something that is used in a background in a lot of movies. expecialy older ones. the first example i can think of would be the scene in star trek 2 when there inside the moon and you see this large undergound evoronment with all the trees and a water fall and all that stuff. that was a matte painting. hope that helps
