A friend wants a comic character designed after an obscure animal (known as potto loris in latin I think) that is like a Lemur. Anyway, i did a quick sketch and he says it looks like a bear. The problem I have is I think with such an obscure animal people are going to associate it with something they know, like a Teddy Bear or whatever. Anyway, I've included a photo of the animal and the sketch... any opinions/comments? Anyone know how to make it look more like the animal and less like a bear? Maybe a bit rounder...?

Well, one thing is that the animal in the photo looks quite timid, while your character has a pretty brave pose. (Although the eyes do look scared) The head could use some tweaking as well, maybe it should be a bit rounder. Now the bulk of the mass is at the top of the head, and the shapes are pretty angular as well, That makes it look a bit like a bear.

part of the problem is that as the "crow flies" so to speak, the creature does look like a bear. Your reference photo suggests that the arms are unnaturally long. You might want to elongate those. That immediately should say "marsiupial."

Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure I know what it looks like now, not a bear at least
