Well, at my piano lesson my sis was early to get me there and late to pick me up, so I drew these two. neither are masterpieces, just practise with shapes and stuff. no lighting obviously on either, but only because theres was 2 many lights in the room to create shadows. also, I have no idea how to do metal. The big lamp was done while the paper was slightly turned, so it looks like the shapes are uneven. anyway, here they are

All critisims, suggestions, etc. highly welcomed (I'm trying to get better at this stuff!)

Well its a little bland, but thats to be expected.

Anyways they look a little flat, maybe a more dynamic background or some values back there? Also It appears that you smudged some with your finger. Big NO NO... Try to stay away from that.

Other then that, keep on making observation sketchs, helps your scale and proportionalize stuff.

Oh yeah, when shading you might want to try Directional Shading, or line shadeing.

Directional should be pretty self spoken, but the line, you will want to achive by making the closest object to you darker (Line wise) then lighter lines as it goes back into the distance.

Anyway, good luck.

heh, I like the qoute on your signiture

Yea, I've tried crosshatching in the past, and the lamp had some natural cross hatching (it was in the weave of it). I did an image in class yesterday called "ode to a bored artist" with an american flag and an overhead... heh so much for the exciting pics

if u smudge with your finger, it leaves fingerprints where u smudged, and u miss the hard edge that u would get with a smudge stick, also if u touch ur picture in another spot it leaves a fingerprint... at least thats why i dont smudge with my finger, that and cus my figure drawing teacher almost kicked my ass when i did it.

u dont need to crosshatch to shade with a pencil, just go in and do the basic shading with your pencil and a smudge stick before u do the details.. :-) just my 2cents

and by the way...
