Ive been working on this for about an hour and 45 minutes so far. What do you guys think about it? Technique improvements I could make perhaps?
I think maybe Im noodling in details a wee bit too early, but Ive been able to suppress the urge to just detail it to death, and then realize the perspective is off...

and the reference

Looks good... I'd say you just need to squish the face horizontally (thin it out). Maybe darken the eyes, but that would come in later when you add in the cracked skin texture and other details. Looks like you've caught most of the angles appropriately. Definitely good framing.

Looks pretty good. I just hope you're not painting OVER the photo... because in that case, everything is pointless...

He isn't. I just tried superimposing the pics and it certainly doesn't look like it was painted over the original (the face he drew is slightly bigger and lower and more to the right).

Looks good though :-)

Well, here it is after an hour and a half more massaging, however Im not really happy with the direction Ive taken it.

I totally spotted the eye right away, and darkened it as per a couple of folks suggestions.

At this point Ive almost given up on making it look exactly like the original, because the angle of the face is slightly off. He is looking a little more directly into the "camera" than he is in the photo. Ive YET to even start on the dirt & grime that covers his face. Ive just been working out facial features.
Anyway, I really apppreciate the critique, PLEASE keep it coming.

This is probably %50 original scale.

I also doubled the size of the file, to noodle in more detail once I get to that point.
Sorry for the size of the image, but I wanted everybody to see the work up close to more closely examine technique. This is probably %50 original scale.

looks good so far. The lower part of the nose should have more form/shapes. And, eyes should be less sharp and not as colorful and bright highlits, then they would fit more with the face...more subtle like in the picture in a way.

keep it up

Ah yes.. Lestat rocks!

of course, nothing can compare to the original, but very nice picture..

Btw.. doesn't Tom Cruise look extremely cute with those make-up effects ?
