Hi,
I like the picture so far. Its really nice. I just want to know what is he doing with the sword, his hand makes it look like he is going to drop it or something.

Hey Superbug,
It's a fairly nice image you got there.
I assume you want to make it more 'real' as you said you wanted to lose the 'cartoony look'. Well, Manga type characters hardly look real for a first. =) Hehe, seriously though, one of the biggest problems with the character is the clear presence of dark sketch lines, which should simply not be present at all.
Sketching is good, but perhaps you should start thinking a bit differently and approach photoshop/painter painting more as a volume definition with colors and tones. Sketch outlines are simply guidelines, they don't make realism. Shape and volume should be defined by colors and tones, not lines. The contrast in the shading of those volumes will automatically define outlines and features. But that's just a tip, I'm not saying your approach is wrong, but I think you'll find it easier to paint in volumes and silouettes. =) You seem to have made the background that way though,... and see how more real it looks already.
A few comments on the pic if I may. The sword handle is a bit short and the hand holding the sword is closed, but half open with the end of the fingers closed... really not a natural way of holding objects... and the fingers are not touching the sword, therefore not holding it. I think his arm to our left couldl use some rework, perhaps distancing the arm a bit from the body to compensate for the weight of the other extended arm (plus the small weight of holding the balance of the sword). Fred once told me to look at myself in the mirror when creating poses to see how the body natrually reacts to counter weights and positions... it's quite interesting. The ambiant lighting in the scene is moderately high, so perhaps you shouldn't have so much pure black in your character.
Keep up the good work! I hope my comments don't discourage you! {=/

i really like it. The only thing that bothers me is the left hand (his right) at the possition he has his arm I cant imagen myself having my hand that way round. I would have it so you can see his palm. I really like the backdrop in this tho |

Hey, I took some time and fixed a couple of things up for ya:
His right hand is facing palm forward for a better perspective. The metal on this pants are a lot more shinier, theres some light reflection off the mountains and I fixed his face a little bit (some lighting errors and his right eye made him look like a bird.)
That's all. Hope ya don't mind.
I forget how to add in a pic so if this doesn't work just go here: http://svgames.homepage.com/pics/maneonix.jpg
Thanks.

Geaahhhh! My pic
I like what u did to the mountains...the armour though is a definate no no, too bright! Um...His hand is better and granted u fixed it awesome, i just dont like what its doin. And finally i actually spotted a mistake in the original. BOTH his eyes are supposed to be black and closed or lookin down, but it turns out it looks like his left eye is open! Yikes! Ok must fix! |
