Well, I worked on this thing all night (6 hours straight, actually). It was done completely from scratch - and entirely in Photoshop. Also, a photo reference was used. I'm very proud of this one (mainly because it's my first finished tablet piece), but there could still be something wrong with it that I'm not aware of.

I would appreciate some constructive criticism, comments, flames, whatever you feel like dishing out.

The painting can be found here:

The photo reference I used can be found here:

looks ok, brian. But, since it's done from photo, and esp. black and white, it's very important that it's all very correct. Like spooge said some time earlier, doing things from photo ref. then it has to be absolutely perfect.
3 thing I reacted the most on.
1. the face and head proportions are off, and also it looks a bit flat, like the other side of the face doesn't exsist.
2. You've highlighted/textured the skin not according to the photo. Skin looks a bit like plastic.
3. if you want to keep it rough, then keep it rough all over, be consistant. Like the skin is cleaned up, but other parts are not..like her clothing for ex., which then makes it look like lumps on her skin or something.
Be much more focused on doing how it actually is on the photo, and not how you think it is. The same thing as when doing figure drawing, it's always important to draw what you see, and not how your brain feel that things are supposed to be.
I'm not trying to be a jerk at all, but I feel that it's better to give you some comments to work on than saying things like "yeah great" which won't be helpful at all.

Let me know if you feel it would be easier if I illustrated these points.

Thanks, Joachim!

My approach has been always to draw exactly what I see (since the first day of my first life drawing classes). Problem is, I have no idea how to create the textures on the skin or the texture of the fabric. And, in some cases (though I'm not sure why), something on the face ends up getting skewed or distorted. I think I'll go back and practice Fred's Head tutorial now that I have my tablet.

Do you know of any decent tutorials for textures related to painting the human form? I don't see anything in the Photoshop brush options that allow you to "Scatter" the brush to make different patterns of dots and make them that brush, if you know what I mean. Similar to Adobe's Preset brushes that look like the texture of a sponge.

I got a bit too quick at the end there when I started work on the fabric. :\
