It is my personal experience that this is hardly ever a bad thing to do, and it does not even to the slightest hinder your imagination. If anything it will improve upon it, and allow you to draw things from your head onto paper more easily. Its a very good tool for learning new things, but also you should draw from life.. not necessarily as reference, but just for the heck of it. That will improve your visualization skills as well.
Hope this helps.. I'm no spooge, but I know he uses photos for reference.

Personally I see nothing wrong with it so long as you have made enough alterations that it no longer looks exactly like the original.
The way I see it, some people are born with art in their blood and have no trouble sketching people perfectly. However, there are those who were not born with such a talent so it must be taught. So, the best way to learn is to use reference pics.
Just remember the even professionals sometimes use references, even Boris (a God in my books ).
Well, as for ALL the time ...... some dont have the ability to draw people so references may be needed. I would recommend getting Poser 4, it's perfect for the job.

dude - everybody is using photoreference ... and it's good, because it shows you in a certain way what nature does ...
I'm actually guilty of not using enough photoreference ... that's why a lot of my stuff looks not how I really would've liked it to look.
Do what ever you like ... reference is good - it shows you what's really going on ...
