To draw your own characters...hmmmm...
Well, walk aroung. Walk around and look at things. Whenever you go anywhere, just observe, and get ideas from stupid or odd stuff. This is vague, but once you can do it, it works well. Or just make up your own star wars character, thats fun too. |

I write more than draw, so I thought Id share my way of coming up with ideas.
Try creating a questionnaire for the character.
What will that character be? Will it be a villain? A hero? A neutral?
Is it a sidekick? A thief? A killer? A leader? A scientist? A politician? A monk? A hermit and so on.
What time do they live in?
What characteristics do they have?
Angry? Happy? Confused? Selfish? Bored? Strong? Weak? etc. What do you want that character to express/represent?
What is the environment they live in in?
Is it sci-fi suburbs? Medieval village? Modern streets?
Where do they spend most of their time? Is it sitting behind a computer with a slice of pizza or lifting weights?
Make up your own questions, the more the easier it is to come up with ideas.
After a few basic questions you could go into detail...
What would make a futuristic scientist appear as one? A few bionic implants maybe? An artificial spine with wires connected to it?
What will blend that guy into his environment better?
Give him some distinctive features. Like some gesture he does in the moment of excitement or a phrase he says? Maybe he has an obsession of some kind or some weird scar or trauma?
What clothes should they wear? Would they pay a lot of attention to how they dress? Are those clothes suitable for their persona? Do they live more in the mind or in the ego?
Blend the characteristics, a little bit of this and that. Maybe the character is a deceiving one, a janitor that works in scientists lab and at night after cleaning the floor he builds his plan to destroy the world or unleash some virus or whatever.
This is all very rough and ugly I usually just try to remember questions. I am sure there is a much better and more organized way to do this. Would be great to see how other guys (especially pros) do it.
(As you can see i suck at writing worse than drawing)

I still have alot of problems with character design/development as well, but as stated above by Plop, you've gotta get into the mind of your character. Right now I'm working on a pic of a vampire huntress... In developing it, I tried to figure several things out:
#1: Her motivation. -- She's bitter, and angry about events past and has decided to take matters into her own hands.
#2: What would she need to hunt vampires? Protection, obviously. I dressed her in heavy leather, some plate armor, and military boots.
#3: What would she need to _kill_ vampires? I ended up giving her a couple weapons, only one of which she's holding...The other two you can see strapped to her back and her leg.
I find that if you get into the mind of your character, try and think "Okay...What would I take with me if I were doing this action?" it helps...
