This is something I started in Febuary and recently finished for a graphics compo held in France. I came in 18th place out of 35 in total. I don't think it's pretty fair, but that's democracy/demoscene for ya .
Anyway, please critique my picture even though it's final. I won't work on it more, but if you guys find mistakes, I'll make sure never to do them again . |

That's heaps good. I love comic style stuff.
How did you do it? Did you ink the sketch and then paint on a layer over the inking?
Or was it all in PS?
Outline the process you underwent please!
Damn, those chains would have taken forever. :O

Very awesome, Grunger ....! Cool style tooo!
The only part, and I hope you don't mind me saying that, that's a little bit confusing is the area around his legs. Since it's comic-style, the trees behind it are inked in black too, that makes it IMHO a little bit gusy.
The rest - composition, lighting and colors are a pleasure ...

Mmmpf! Primo work here! There's something about blue light and black ink trees and outlines that makes the world go 'round.
The bustling veins on his right arm are superbly soft-shaded!
Does this guy wear a mask, cuz I don't see a nose.
And.... will you draw us a cool Samus Aran fig in this style? Please... <drool> |

Nice work Snake. =) Nice to see the full res too.
No, I really don't think it's fair to get 18th -- I'm definately sure that a lot of pics that came before yours were absolute crap... I don't even need to look, it's just typical demo scene stuff.
I think it looks great. Forget the demo scene, they suck. You're much better off doing your own thing and getting praises from REAL people. =)
cheers,
frost. |

Jason: I did everything in Photoshop from A to Z. First I did a blackish silouhette of the guy, then I filled in all the color. I have four layers set out for this: Background is the yellowish/blueish sky color, other is trees in back, then the character and last is the leaves and trees up front.
Loki: Yeah, I know what you mean.. This is a copy though, and I didn't modify anything except the veins, which were very straight on the original drawing, I just decided to make them more wiggly according to Frost's comments Which gave a great outcome I would say! Colors aren't so good though, I didn't mix much and every shade is the same color over and over. Micke and Joachim gave me pointers on overlays and stuff to have more luminosity and color shades. I think I'll use those techniques in future drawings.
Sergenth: Nah, he doesn't wear a mask, he's just like that. I guess I'll scan in a close-up on his face on another page of the comic so it makes more sense. Had my pic (or source) looked better, you wouldn't have had that interrogation .
Frost: Thanks for the cheer-me-up I was feeling pretty down when I say not 8th not 13th but 18th place on the results thing. I then studied the other entries and realized something's really corrupted going on in the voter's heads. But the demoscene itself is fun.. That's where I met most of the awesome people I know today (You for example!) Democracy is the bad thing here. Politics always sucked. But, what can you do about it? That's how society gets stuff done.
Anyhoo, thanks for your warm comments everyone I will proceed onto another pic now and do something I should've done before choosing to draw Pitt: make better choice of source drawing! Or else get fucked if you realize the source sucks after drawing it for 15 hours. |
