I tried using a more "painterly" approach with this picture, as opposed to doodling a sketch. I think it helped a lot with feeling the shapes that are there. I didn't really think about the shape of the neck/body until i was almost done, so it has some major errors (ie, i'm not sure it parses as a solid object at all )
Any tips/ideas on this? I'm just starting to try to get out of a line-drawing approach, so anyone who know anything at all will be able to find errors in this image ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

I'm not much of a painter. But all I can really say is that if you want your pic to be less "liney" I think you should use the grey more. That way you can use the grey shades to define the beak more rather than using the line on the outer edge of the beak. Did you understand my jumble of words?
But anyway, I think it looks cool with out being all painterly. It looks like a design or logo or something like that. Good work!

Well then, my first post...
I won't claim to be very good at this, but maybe I can help illustrate what Jason is talking about. I too am trying to break free from the lines, kind of difficult...
I did this little quickie on top of yours. The way that seems to work for me now is to do a quick sketch, just outlining the basic shape so I have the general design, proportions etc. in place. That way I can concentrate on getting the rest right. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but at the moment this works ok for me.
Cheers!
