What do you think is the right resolution and size for a wallpaper? Will the quality of the image get blurry making enlarging the image?
I was thinking on making this image to a wallpaper :

I allways make my wallpapers in 2400x1200 in 300dpi - so i can print them clearly at a nice size. However, if you dont want to print em, you can stick to something like 1280x1024 on 72dpi - that will look fine on every monitor (except for those running higher than the image's actual size - not many). |

Thanks for the information!
But what I'm most worried about it the sharpness of the image. I've scanned that image and my scanner is not one of the best. So do what can i do to make it more clear and sharp?

1280 x 960 or 1600x1200
are the perfect resolutions for wallpapers.
Do not use 1280x1024, it's a classic newbie mistake. That resolution does NOT follow the 4:3 ratio that all other rez do. Thus, when you scale an image down from 1280 x 1024 to something like 1024x768 the picture will lose a lot of detail and clarity.
As for enlarging that pic you have up their.. . . .
1. First I would crop the section you want as a wallpaper. Remember the 4:3 ratio and also the fact that it must be a square.
2. After you have cropped it in a 4:3 ratio gaussian blur the image so that the lines start fading. This would be a very light blur but it depends on the image so it's your call.
3. Go to image>size and make it 1280x960
4. Then go to filter>sharpen untill the image looks good.
The pic won't look perfect with this method but it will allow you to convert a smaller image into a universal wallpaper.
This is a pretty good tutorial, I should post it on my site WHEN I FINISH THE PIECE OF SHIT!

Mantis : never had any problems with scaling to 1280x1024. Crispy smoothy sharp 10 out of 10. |

You can always add a little bit of noise after you've scaled it to whatever size you want. Check the Monochromatic option and use a setting of 5-10, depending on what you like. Works wonders.

Here is another option for resizing an image up. Some people say this program doesnt do any better than the built in resize function of Photoshop but others say that it does a signifigantly better job. Youll just have to try it and deciede for yourself. Personally I think it does a pretty good job.
Basically there is a plugin for photoshop called geninue fractals printpro. This plugin allows you to resize an image up (including alterations in dpi). It uses a mathematical algorithm based on fractals to create the larger image. The demo version gives you like 15 uses of it. So that should be enough to resize your image upwards and see for yourself if the quality suffers.
In addition once the image has been encoded with the fractal algorithm the file gets compressed signifigantly so if you have a large image file 30-70megs or something you can use this programs file format to compress it down to something much smaller say maybe 8 megs (just a guess). Without supposedly losing any of the data.
