OK...

I still don't have a clue how I can get a job even after I graduate from a 4-year art institute. Is on-campus recruitment common among art departments in normal 4-year colleges, not just in private art institutes?

The industry is tightly sealed from outsiders, as far as I know. Some say unless you have a connection with people in the industry you get fat chance of getting into industry. How? I have no clue.

I really haven't created serious career portfolio yet, from my standard. For last 13 months I have concentrated on drawing and painting, not much on purely creative process like creature design and stuff. Once you get expelled from that dang fagot orange spot you lose your motivation to draw some cool robots, spaceships, costumes, creatures and stuff. -_-;

So please enlighten me about finding a job in the industry. I tend to stress on traditional drawing and painting skill.

Oh, soon I will post my pencil drawing. So stay sharp.

Glad to hear you are stressing the basic skills.

I really dont agree that the industry is sealed against outsiders. They are always interested in the best talent, not out of being nice but out of self interest.

Check out the work of those who claim it is sealed. You might find an alternate explanation as to why they are unemployed.

Bungie had ads for a variety of positions on their site for quite a while. I see other positions offered quite often all over the web.

There are game company employees here, and I know WacomMonkey is in charge of hiring artists at Presto. If I am wrong about this, straighten me out.

My advice is to not worry about it. Concentrate on doing the best work you can, the other will take care of itself.

talent is always at a premium in the gamedev world, especially artists who are trainable in LD, 3dsmax/maya or other tasks, but have basic illistration and drawing skills as well. I think it's prettymuch a given that companies will take someone with an awsome portfolio of traditional work who doesn't know 3dsmax worth beans over someone who's got a lot of 3dsmax technical expierence, but not much general artistic skill.

I find in programming that there are design patterns, you see the same situation over and over in new contexts. LD and game design ended up being the same way, and I'm finding drawing and painting are as well. Look at work like spooges, it's clear he's sculpting those forms in perfect 3d in his mind, I'm sure he'd have no problem becomming productive in other sorts of tools: he's got visualization down.

So, I don't profess to be an expert or a pro or anything... but I am a highschool dropout that's managed to live pretty damn well over the last few years doing all kinds of things in industries that were supposedly hard to break into. Hollywood is hard to break into, the rest is pretty damn open. Don't sweat it, emphasise the basic and global skills, they'll reward you for the rest of your life.

hey, i think part of getting a good job as you are obviously after isnt just who you know.. its also who knows you. Get your portfolio done.. get it out there.. show it off to people... send your CV off to people.. even if the job is higher than you believe you can go.. just aim. do a little free/underpaid freelance stuff... put that in your portfolio etc.

Often the harder you try the further you
Good luck bub

So far I've done primarily LD, 3d modeling for objects and environments, and to a more minor extent, game design, cinematic design, and some some simpler in game engine scripting.

I'm not doing professional gamedev anymore for a variety of reasons... the primary ones being I'm sick of working on projects that get sacked for business reasons, and also because I've finally come to the conclusion virtual office doesn't work. I don't want to relocate just yet, so I've switched focus for a while.
