Hey everybody..
went to Utrecht today, my lovely city of birth, to pick up my ordered copy of Brom's Darkwrks book. On the bookshelf I noticed this book "MASS" by a fella called John Harris. Had never heard of him before. When I started flicking through the pages my jaw literally dropped on the counter. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so adept at combining such suggestive paintstrokes with rough detail and achieve such an awesome sense of scale. John Berkey eat your heart out... Phew...
Anyone familiar with the work of this guy? And how come I wasn't aware of it?!?! Damnit damnit.. I feel like I've missed out...
If you don't own this book, get it now, look, break down and weep then pick up your wacom pen and start all over again!
in awe..

I picked the book up at Bud Plant at the Comic Con this year. I've been a big fan for years, ever since I saw his reprint cover for James Blish's Cities in Flight, back in the seventies, I think. Glad they finally published a book of his work. He's probably best known for the US edition covers for Orson Scott Card's Ender series. Omni magazine has also featured a lot of his work over the years.
P.S. I just picked up the Art of Road & Track book. Besides a lot of great automotive illustrators, it also features some Berkey work that isn't in Painted Space. |

Danny,
I've never heard of the guy, but I added the book to my shopping cart just in case.
Is there any info online?
There's a rather famous man named John Harris who created the timepiece on ships to determine longitude. I keep running into him when lookingn for more about this artist.

AliasMoze,
the only remotely decent site I could find that contained a bit of info on him before I retreated back to the book itself was at http://www.fantasiaonline.com/harris/index.html
However, the scans there are truly horrible. Jpeg artifacts, colour is warped, stamp sized.. etc.. Certainly doesn't do his work justice hehehe and they're trying to sell $150 Iris prints.. go figure..
Please let me know if you manage to find anything better.
