I just came across these images from Alphonse Mucha, one of the greatest figurative artists of all time, imo.
Don't you think if he had Photoshop (this was done in the 1800's) he would have just slapped the photo on the bottom layer and painted over it?
Using photo ref can be a huge time saver, and it doesn't mean that you no longer have any creative decisions to make. It's just another tool like anything else.

No.. I think if he wanted to do that he would have just painted over the photograph. He probably wasn't thinking of his method as cheating to create a picture, but instead a method to duplicate a photo by hand. When I recreate an image I want it to look as identical to the original as possible. Not only will it look great, but kinda gives me a sense of what kind of control I have over my perception and hand control I guess.
