Ok, so I finally got a chance to get back to work on this picture, and I'm having a hell of a time with the face. Specifically, I can't get the eyes to match. I know neither one is horribly correct in it's own right, but if I could just get them to look wrong in the same way, I'd be happy!
So barring experience, are there any specific tricks I can use to get the eyes to match up?
Oh, and damn you Rinaldo for that re-paint you did a few weeks back... you forced me to set my standards much higher than I had originally intended. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

Based on what I percieve your intended angle on the head is...
It looks like her eyes are slanted a little too far upward. Granted there is a slight curvature to the face which becomes a little more apparent when the head is tilted downward, which I've illustrated with the straight line across the center of the eyes, and then the slightly angled other lines out from the center of that one. Hope that helps...

Waylon-hello. I have taken a liberty again, I hope you don't get offended by this rework. I took it too real, as yours is more stylized and almost animated looking. Keep an eye on your head tilt. When you tip the chin down, the ears go up in their placement, your ear is lower, almost in a head on sort of way.
THe other thing to keep aneye on is the parallels. All the facial features are lined up parallel to one another, this is another helpful tip that helps keep all the features in check with one another.
Get a solid hairline in there also, and determine where the centerpoint on the hairline is, define it with a part or widows peak or something. It helps in centering features on the head. If you shift the part to the left or right of center, it could influence where you place the features cause your eye is trying to line things up in the entire image.
Rinaldo-I like your version. It looks like an Asian girl that was at Craigs talk at art center. She was hot!!!

Hiya waylon.
Had a bit of a play around. The main thing I noticed was that you were drawing them cross eyed. they were both pointing inwards. the other things was that you could see the whole circle-thing (damn I don't know what it's called ) you only really see it like this when the person is supprised of otherwise "wide eyed".
the eye is almost always looking up (if you know what I mean) more of a half circle cut off by the top lid. normaly (and I just flipped through half a fashon mag looking the eyes) there is white beneath the circle if the persons head is tilted down in the slightest and they are looking up. it all depends on the particular eye, but the general rule as far as my experiance is that the top lid will cut the circle and the bottom will be either touching it slightly or you will be able to see white in between. it all depends on how closed/open the eye is and wheatehr the person is looking up/down but the tentative rules still apply. when the eye is closed more the circle still seems to be looking up more. Looking through mags It seems that the top lids is mostly just shy of touching the pupil (is the circle the iris then?) Even when the subject is looking down and the camera is down low pointing up I'm observing in one photo.
Anyway.
Here's my redo:
And if you're interested I lined up the eyes and cropped my redo. just so you can see the differences (I hope this doesn't seem too "look at me")
When I was doing this I thought the eyes were very slanted. But I think it works just the same. more a stylistic thing.
It's looking good btw. and I hope this helps a litle.
Ohh and I can show everyone the "ultra cheesy, quick an' easy" eye rendering technique if ya want
[edit: I forgot to mention that I whacked some more pronounced eye lashes in there too, pretty obvious but anyway]

Hoo, boy! I think this is a little better.
Thanks for all the great advice, guys. It was invaluable in fixing this up. Rinaldo and Fred, it was especially helpful being able to use your versions as reference. (Sorry if I copied the eyes too closely, Rinaldo. )
So... is there anything that needs fixing in this version? |

It looks pretty darn good waylon
The ear and surrounding hair need cleaning up but I'm not sure whether you were reffering to the rest of the head when asking if there was anything else needed. the eyes do it for me |

I get the feeling that the mouth is a tiny bit to much to the right(our). It doesnt look like it is matching up with the nose...perhaps its just me being an a-hole.... |

Rinaldo: About the ear thing... I was tired. Though I was kind of hoping I could skimp on the detail and finish the rest of this picture one of these days... (Hey, I have a deadline now. I'm going to be entering this in the GFX compo at Coma 2 this weekend.) You're right though, it does look a bit disproportinately messy. I'll sharpen it up a bit.
Slicer: I can't believe I never noticed that before! I'll fix it. |
