Brummit,
I would suggest starting out your works looser in general. Block in the bodyparts as general shapes that you can rework easily. Then, as the positions and proportions start to look right, you can begin to tighten it up.
As far as shading, think more about shading the marine as a whole object, rather than shading each individual body part. Again, work general large areas of light and dark, and as those take shape, bringout more subtlety in the light areas and dark areas.
To sum up, work general to specific.

nice job with the shading and all, but your anatomy needs some work, it looks a little distorted, especially on the right arm. |

Well... big head, small torso, and stubby arms. Even though you didn't draw the legs you may want to draw lines to represent the length. That way you can make everything in proportion. Here is a quick reference:
top half of the arm = one and half heads
bottom half of the arm (fingers extended) = two heads
legs = 4 heads
total height = 8 heads.

Actually Brummit, i will comment not
doing the legs since the arms is longer than the body. It makes the picture look very uncompleted. You'll need to study anatomy.
buy some books. The arms are to short and the body too, head is too big and the shading looks too smudgy and random. Does this make sense? Good luck!
