Some ideas from El dorado that never saw the light of day.

Jeez Craig, don't you ever sleep?? I really like the color in this one. The fog really makes you feel imersed in the landscape. Just one question, is the horse lying down? Regardless it's a great image, I can't believe they didn't use any of these that you did for the movie.

Nice stuff... Spooge some of your stuff looks very graphic-design-ish, probably from the textures in the left section of the painting... just add ThreeOh style typography, obtuse geometric shapes and there ya go =)

Greetings,

I don't like the fact that we don't see what the character is looking at.
It's obstructed by the tree. It could be nothing, it could be something. Should make things interesting usually... or maybe not.

Otherwise, overall, looks nice ;-)

Farewell,

Love it Spooge.

It looks like you have overlayed a grass/tree texture/photo in the bottom left no? Very nice. I just can't get enough of those colours. So fresh. It really has a sense of magic.
I may be over reacting but this might be one of my all time favourites of yours Craig
Heh...I've probably used up all my "bigger pic credits" so I won't ask (although I just kinda did). I just want a bit more info on the nice grass/moss thing that is happening down in the bottom-left.

*Sigh*...Being a technique monger again.

if it is a questionmark near that horse, then the horse probably wonders if it's lying down, or lost its legs

picture is lovely, although i've seen quite a lot way better pictures by you Craig

Horsey is standing chest high in the dense foliage. He is thinking about how to get across the water, and that he is hungry and tired.

Umm, yeah, that will work.

That is why I like posting, Rinaldo likes it a lot more than Virago. I like hearing what people think. As an illustrator, it is really important feedback.

There was an awful lot of very nice work done for Eldorado, by a lot of great artists. What went wrong? Ugh. This scene was conceptualized by Christian Schellenwald (sorry if I did not spell your last name accurately). Fred Warter did some beautiful color keys as well.

Voyager, hes looking at the city? maybe? yea? Good to hear the concern.

Since the Hudson River school was the style guide for the preproduction, I was looking at Niagara falls by Frederic Church.

The texture look to this painting is absolutely beautiful spooge. Its nice to see you create some brighter images. I know this had to be a change for you since you seem to go with darker lighting in your pics.

That's very nice Spooge! Love the density in the air, and the drop in saturation in the haze at the edge of the waterfall... very nice! If I had to say ONE thing, it would be that the foreground is too pure in hue and saturation -- but I guess it works out that way.

Hmm, I have to see that movie... haven't seen it yet. Any good?

ouch, very nice spooge. Both this one and the one you did out of flexible elf's pic.
Btw, did you do both of these now, or is this conquistador pic actually a consept picture you did for eldorado ?

Looks really like a classical painting, especially with that texturing and colors..kind of reminds me a bit of the coloring rembreandt did on his background paintings. DOn't know if you think that's a stupid comment , but I hope you take it as a compliment anyway

Nice pic Spooge, how much time did the production allow for it's completion??

Joachim, here you will find the painter that influenced the look of the painting.

www.artcyclopedia.com/history/hudson-river-school.html

look for Frederic Edwin Church.

I was going to ask if you were inspired by Church on this one. I'm no Church expert; I just recognize the waterfall.

I think it's the framing on this one I'm not wild about. I think the pose on the guy could be stronger too.

Don't get me wrong, though. If I'd painted it, I'd frame it.

Okay, this solidifies it.

Craig, you are now officially my favorite artist. It used to be Van Gogh, but you've replaced him.... I'm quite serious.

Needless to say, I bow to you.

One of my favourite art movements was the Hudson River School (and Church was a particular favourite in that group) so I totally love this painting and the others Spooge has done that are similar. (waterfall.jpg is a big fave)

The Hudson River School, for those that don't know, was a 50 year period of American landscape painting (1825-1875).

The painters that belonged to this group focused on painting grand American vistas with the "grand" part pumped up to full volume. They were quite happy to push reality deep into the realm of fantasy in order to get the most awe-inspiring scene they could get.

There's many books on the subject and if you like these images of Spooge's it would be well worth tracking one down.

Good stuff.
