[This topic seems to have re-surfaced - I'm not bothered about that, but I've put the finished version up first before anyone adds any more! ]
This is an update of a pic I posted on sijun a while back. I decided to update the pic and thought "What about the Nautilus?". So, here she is.
Bear in mind that this is a 1 hour sketch, so I haven't refined the ship yet - hence it still looks a bit sketchy. Thing is though, I've played with the contrast/brightness but just can't get the ship to look like it's a part of the whole scene. It just looks so fake.

i don't think it's a matter of brightness/contrast as much as a matter of tint- the environment is very bluish, and it should affect the color of the light that hits the ship. Also, try making it reflect in the water, might help.
Overall, it's looking good- quite an interesting design for the ship. |

The image looks great..very nice job, very eye catching...
Only thing is, at first look, that water looks more like dark clouds...I didn't notice it was water till I read Bilbo's response.
The reason it appears like a dark cloud to me is cause of what I assume is light water splash looks more like fog or dense mist...
Very nice work though!

I had a few minutes to kill waiting for a render so I thought I'd mouse in a few suggestions.
The left-most bit of the Nautilus formed a distracting tangent with the edge of the image, so I got rid of it. I also added some rough reflections to the water, and specular highlights to the creature to make it look wet.

great picture ceenda!
your second version looks a lot better than before!
I think you could work on the glass window eye a bit more (the reflections) and maybe you could add some blue to the Nautilus.. I think the water would reflect blue light to the ship.
Maybe you could darken the orange color a slight bit and desaturate it. Add some scratches or stuff like that... But this is just my idea of a nautilus.. maybe you have other things in mind.
I really dig your water. Could you explain how you made it? I mean if you start bright and go dark or otherwise..

Woooaaah... that is sweet!
Thanks balistic! You've kinda hit a few nails on the head there.
Nex: Thanks for the comments , however, is it balistic's advice you want about the water?

Basically, I set out the areas of colour as a rough mirror image of the area above the ocean though I often make it a bit darker.
Then, I use the blend tool and make a wave motion horizontally across the water. This blends the various colours together and gives it a nice effect. I use a smaller brush in the distance and a large brush in the foreground.
I only started experimenting with reflections recently. |

The reason my water's a little brighter is because water is /usually/ more reflective at shallow angles . . . unless its got a lot of silt or algae in it, water leans towards the color of the sky its under.
Don't be afraid to stretch out those ripples horizontally Ceenda, they can really help establish the water plane and make it lay flat.
Cool piece, I look forward to the finished version.

Your image is AWESOME!
Yhe only thing i have to say about it is the water areound the nautilis is too "cloudy" IMHO it should look more "sprayish" kicking up doplets of water, if you mastered this i just may have to make you image my desktop! |

Yeah, I'll try to make the water more dynamic, and I think I'll recolour or even redraw the Nautilus from scratch.
I'll post the final pic when it's finished.

Definetly some Relflections are going to be in the water, and perhaps some water Froth that white frothy water that always appears when theres lots of splashing going on....or when some big NAUTALIS is Crashing through the waves, or Surfacing, as it seems to be doing, without more splash and water running all over the place it looks like the Nautalis is just kinda sitting there when it really seems like it should be JUMPING up and oiutta the picture splashing around in all that PURTY OCEAN!! awesome tho! i love the Contrast of colors! |
