There are a few questions I need answers to. All concerning art schools in one way or another.
I am planning to go to university but since english ain't my native language(I am Icelandic) I would like to have some questions answered about the following subjects.
What do those courses teach, basicly.
Fine arts.
(Do people in this course draw something cool or are they only throwing paint on canvas)
Industrial Design
(Do they only draw cars and machines or do they learn something cool)
Illustration
(Do they only draw things others have drawn and never do something innovative)
Animation
(Do they learn how to model amazing models or are they just concerned about the movement of the model itself)
My goal is to learn on some 3d program(like Maya) yet evolve my artistic skill (so I can draw cool things). And I also need to know if I would like to learn any of the things mentioned how long would it take, and if I can take two courses at any school or not. I am mostly aiming to learn things that would serve me in the gaming industry as that is the field I would preferably want to work in.
I ain't very familiar to english terminology to know what is involved with each course so I beg of you to give me some pointers. I am in a sort of identity crisis here.
And am I too old to think of things like this ( I will be 21 in december)

well i cant speak for the other courses but im taking a Fine arts course here in the Uk pretty soon. The course as i know it consists of 4 years, the time is spent on various things, art foundation, art history and everything else you would expect.
I dont advise you taking this course unless you have a deep intrest in all forms of art, a fine arts qualification can go a long way though as its basicly a sign post for an employer that your a competent artist and know your stuff.
However if your more concerned with learning the ins and outs of a computer program i wouldnt advise a fine arts course. |

well svanur I think it all depends on which school you're going to be in.
Find out the school's curriculum and talk to old students from different programs. Don't be afraid to ask and have different sources of info.
So you won't end up being screwed by a school like I was ;p

Maybe you don't have to go to a school. If you want to work in the game industry you won't find a school that can teach you that. A lot of people in this industry have just learned by themselves, and by 'doing' it. What you need is a good artistic and esthetic sense, some style, and some good basic drawing skill (that you can learn with the free art courses you can find on this website
If you have some kind of online protfolio or something gimme the address and I'll tell you what I think (for what it's worth - about 9 years of experience in this freakin' industry... haha). |
