I'm going to buy a digital camera this Christmas. I'm looking to spend no more than $300. What I want is a nice compact USB camera with atleast 4mb memory, 2x optical zoom (but I'll settle for digital zoom), LCD display, and up to 1024x768 resolution.
Could you camera owners recommend one? Any advice would be nice too. Thank you.

Canon EOS. I know they aren't digital, but if you have a scanner, a single frame of 35mm film is equal to 2048 by 1536. That's 3,145,728 pixels. Much better than the 786,432 pixels you would get with 1024 by 786.
Better optics too.
