Hi guys, I just worked through this awsome lesson of Fred Flick Stone and He says in one point, that we should take our Fingers from Burne Hogarth.
Well, uhm, I just bought this book a week ago (suggestion of an anime painter) and worked through the lessons about the face til now.
But after I read the post of Fred I was really scared! Is it bad to go on with Hogarth, or is it just not efficient? I must admit that his paintingstyle is not very realistic, but after the lessen about the face I really had a better understanding of that matter! (Even thoug I don't paint his Style)
please tell me why Hogarth is a bad, and others might be a better deal.
(especially those guys that know some books and some anathomy, or even taught this stuff allready to classes)
thanx,
shinkin |

Opinions.. opinions.. opinions. Hogarth just has his own opinion. Fred has his own opinion.. spooge has his own opinion.. you should have your own opinion.. I have my own opinion.. my dog has his own opinion. Anyway, I don't think there is anything wrong with Hogarth's or ANY artist's process. Just consider books and references as that artist's opinion on how to do things and then make your own. |

I guess nothing is really bad, unless you find yourself becoming a clone of whatever material you use as a teaching aide. Hogarth has his good points and bad. Another book to look at is Bridgman's guide, for a more straight forward way of looking at the human form. There are probably a ton other books available, however, the best teacher of all is..... real life.
Look around and study your friends and family. Work out in your head why things work the way they do, so on. You'll see that there is a logical design to the head, arms, etc., when you have this understanding from the ..source.., you have a much better advantage then if you relied on another artists understanding and interpretation of the human form.
Initially I used different outlets for an understanding of the human form, such as comic books (mainly), other artists' paintings, Hogarth, Bridgman's. To this day, I still have trouble getting away from ingrained habits. It hasn't been, til recently that a bubble popped in my head and I've realized, life is our best teacher, and I have been working for over ten years now as an artist. Think of all the wasted time!!!!

oh thanx, Rinaldo,
that old threat helped a lot,
My conclusions: I'll end the book, but I'll also look at others and at NATURE, of course
