This is a drawing that I did, using values . . .
It would be nice if you could give me some ideas and crits or possibly even rework it ala Spooge, Francis, Fred, or whoever, I really dont mind!

Thanks so much!

Hi Steve, I did a quick mouse repaint while I was waiting for a render:

Basically, when you're painting with value, you really need to /push/ the value . . . you need to cover most of the ground between white and black to really round out your forms.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Errrrrrrrrrrr...........

Well I'm realy not the person to ask but. I thought I'd try and help out.

Have a look at these pics

Have a look at the colour paletes. you can see that a lot of these colours are the same shade of Grey. but they are at the same time different colours.
Have you read fred's cube thing. if not he explains it better there.
Values are the dark, light of any given colour. your pic is basicaly one shade of green and thus one value. If you have a look at the redo I did in both colour and B+W you can see that I have basicaly 3 values. I don't think the values I've chosen are very good, I'm still trying to get a hang of it too. but It illustrates what I'm talking about.
Also have a look at balistic's pic you can see the values he has used. (I think this is how it works anyway).

No doubt someone will be able to shed a lot more light on it than I have, and possibly correct me.
There is no such thing as "painting in values" as such. you do it all the time when painting every colour you use has a value. the trick is to get the vales right irrespective of colour.

Haven't done any straight portrait stuff like this since college, but here goes.

A note: this topic was thoroughly discussed in the past, courtesy of Fred in a series of tutorials he posted (concerning head drawing, which is the staple of any good painting). You should look back and give them a read through, they will help you with your basic foundation, thus providing a clearer guide, then you'll see that painting it will come much easier. These guys here, have jobs they have to worry about, and can't drop everything they're doing to rehash stuff they already explained. I don't want to sound harsh, but when a lesson is taught here by those who know, you should take the said lessons very serious. Use them and experiment on your own, incorporating what the lessons have to say. You'll find experimentation, trial and error, etc. is what helps you advance as an artist.

Again, don't get discouraged by what I have wrote, but learn these lessons that are available here. The basic fundamentals have to dealt with, then you'll see that everyhting falls into place afterwards, as far as finalizing your work.

Here's my try at it. Maybe a good tip would be copying a colour-photo trying to get the values as right as possible with just a pencil. That would maybe get you a better
understanding of values, contrasts..

I don't know if this will be a help to any of you, but if you want some reference to see what kind of values should go where, or whatever, you can take any picture, convert it to grayscale, and then make it into a monotone (image>mode>duotone)
Anyways, it might be useful to just compare values or whatever, and you can do it to photos or other digital art that you've already done... or whatever..
Anyways, I hope I somehow helped...

Your pic looks way better in B+W balistic. Bad colour choice, but good value choice

[edit note: 'sokay General Confusion, I have days just like that ]

I've read Fred's lessons in the past. I'll search for more value issues on the forum.

Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate it!
